Fujitsu Distinguished Engineers Scheme

Recognising and rewarding technical excellence

The Fujitsu Distinguished Engineer (FDE) scheme was created by Fujitsu in 1988. It was one of the first initiatives of its type to recognise and reward technical excellence. The scheme was highly successful and was replicated by other IT organisations such as Sun Systems, Microsoft and Dell.

The scheme recognises outstanding performance of technologists in Fujitsu. It’s awarded to those who continually demonstrate a high level of achievement across all areas of their work including technical knowledge, creativity, being a company ambassador and role model, initiative, visibility and tenacity.

The aims of the scheme are to:

  • Recognise, reward and retain outstanding technical achievers
  • Share knowledge and best practise across the business
  • Provide role models for the technical workforce
  • Broaden the professional development and contribution of technical specialists
  • Promote and pursue technical excellence as a strategic company asset both internally and externally

The role of FDEs includes advising and sharing knowledge with employees across the business, and identifying areas in which Fujitsu can improve its performance.

FDEs are recommended by their peers, and those recommendations are considered by the Fujitsu Fellows. They are reviewed on an annual basis, ensuring that FDEs continue to maintain the highest standards and share their expertise.

Fellows are existing Distinguished Engineers who have been further recognised for excellence in their field. They have a track record of fostering technical capability, and sometimes represent the organisation as a world class authority at the highest possible level. The current Fujitsu Fellows scheme continues the tradition of the ICL FellowshipOpen a new window, a group recognised for leading ICT innovation over the past four decades

The FDE scheme is open to all Fujitsu staff who work in a technical role.

The benefits to FDEs include internal and external recognition; FDE network events; the annual FDE conference; and networking and learning opportunities. For Fujitsu, the benefits are primarily the establishment of mentors and role models across the technical areas of the business, and the insight that FDEs contribute, via improvement suggestions made to the Fellows.
