Fujitsu's wraparound view monitor technology has received the Fiscal 2015 Commendation for Science and Technology from the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

Five engineers from Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd., Fujitsu Ten Limited, and Socionext Inc, who developed technologies used in a wraparound view monitor system, have won the Fiscal 2015 Commendation for Science and Technology Prize (Development Category), which was awarded by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. The award ceremony was held on Tuesday, April 15th at the auditorium of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

Commendation for Science and Technology by MEXT

The Commendation for Science and Technology is awarded by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) to individuals who have been particularly successful in areas such as research and development and promoting understanding of science and technology. By celebrating successes in these areas, the award is intended to increase the motivation of people involved in science and technology and improve the level of science and technology in Japan.

Award-winning Technology

Vehicle-mounted camera monitoring systems have previously been brought to market seeking to reduce pedestrian accidents when reversing a motor vehicle and to support drivers when parking. However, there was a need for technology that could display images from a wider field of view, eliminating blind spots for increased safety and peace of mind.

The award winners developed a "wraparound view monitor technology" which utilizes 3D computer graphic processing to combine images of the direct periphery around a vehicle and provide a 360 degree view of a wider area including views of the background using four on-vehicle cameras. This fresh approach and advanced camera monitoring system allows the driver to see displays from any direction and enables the driver to change the perspective of the image in a smooth manner.

The technology makes it possible to display peripheral objects and one's spatial relation with other vehicles from the optimum viewpoint in a manner that is easy to understand. This type of wide field of view and added visibility of peripheral objects was not possible with previous products. It creates a driver support system and especially effective in generating images to support the driver such as when looking out for oncoming traffic and pedestrians at intersections and checking rear safety when changing lanes. As such, the technology introduces a greater level of drive safety.
