» A Finnish grocery store is testing self-checkout

Helsinki, 20 June, 2012

The Finnish food retail took a step towards next generation service solutions, as the S Group's first PIKA self-checkout stations were launched at S-market Vallila in Helsinki on June 5.  Now the new checkout system is also in test use at the Group's grocery store in Lahti.

”Our customers have for quite some time already been hoping to have the opportunity to scan and pay their goods using self-checkout. After looking into and testing a variety of systems we have now found a solution that is easy to use and caters for the needs of the Finnish retail industry,” says Jukka Ojapelto, Vice President for the S Group.

With the new self-checkout (SCO) system, customers gather items into a shopping cart as usual, but then they both scan and pay for their purchases at a self-checkout station.

The self-checkout solution was implemented by Fujitsu Finland Oy, who is also the supplier of S Group's grocery store POS systems, for example. Fujitsu's U-Scan SCO system was developed in North America, where self-checkout systems have been used for years already.

”U-Scan is easy to use because it utilises commonly used techniques, such as touch menus and help texts. Voice guidance is provided in the language of the customer's choice. The system comes with an abundance of features that support use, it is easily scalable and easy to install,” says director Matti Koskinen from Fujitsu's Application services.

At this point the self-checkout concept is being tested in two S grocery stores. Decisions on the expansion of the service will be based on the experiences gathered from these tests.

”We will take our time and see how well it works and how well it is received by our customers. The concept is basically chain independent, but it is too early to say whether the service will be rolled out to other stores or chains,” Jukka Ojapelto says.
