65Lesson 7■書かきます kakimasu write ■勉べんきょう強します benkyoo-shimasu study Grammar notes1 Verb conjugationVerbs in Japanese change their forms, i.e., they conjugate, and they are divided into three groups according to the type of conjugation. Depending on the following phrases, you can make sentences with various meanings.2 Verb groups1) Group I verbs (consonant verbs)This group is called consonant verbs because the stem ends with a consonant.■ 書かく kak-u 書かきます kak-i-masu write  ■ 読よむ yom-u 読よみます yom-i-masu read2) Group II verbs (vowel verbs)This group is called vowel verbs because the stem ends in a vowel.In most of the verbs of this group, the last sound of the masu-form is that of the え e -line, but in some verbs the last sound of the masu-form is that of the い i -line.■ 食たべる tabe-ru 食たべます tabe-masu eat  ■ 見みる mi-ru 見みます mi-masu see3) Group III verbs (irregular verbs)This group is that of irregular inflection.Only two verbs belong to this group. Naturally, if the listener is one's superior, this expression cannot be used for giving instructions to him/her.
