19Lesson 1Grammar notes3 ~さん -san suffix added to a nameさん -san is added to the name of the listener or a third person to show the speaker's respect for him/her. It should never be used with the speaker's own name.■ [あの 方かたは]キム・ミヨンさんです。 [Ano kata wa] Kim Miyoung-san desu. She is Ms. Kim Miyoung.When referring directly to the listener, the word 'あなたanata(you)' is not commonly used if you know the listener's name. The listener's family name followed by さん san is usually used.4 N1 はwa N2 ですかdesu ka Is N1 N2?1) Particle か kaThe particle か ka is used to express the speaker's doubt, question, uncertainty, etc.A question is formed by simply adding か ka to the end of the sentence. A question ends with a rising intonation.2) Question asking whether a statement is correct or notAs mentioned above, a sentence becomes a question when か ka is added to the end. The question thus made asks whether a statement is correct or not.Depending on whether you agree with the statement or not, your answer to such a question begins with はいHai or いいえIie.■ 富ふじつう士通の 社しゃいん員ですか。……はい、そうです。……いいえ、そうではありません。 Futjitsu no shain desu ka. ……Hai, soo desu. ……Iie, soo dewa arimasen. Is he/she a Fujitsu employee? ……Yes, he/she is. ……No, he/she isn't.3) Questions with interrogativesAn interrogative replaces the part of the sentence that covers what you want to ask about. The word order does not change, and か ka is added to the end.■ あの 方かたは どなたですか。……[あの 方かたは]キム・ミヨンさんです。 Ano kata wa donata desu ka. ……[Ano kata wa] Kim Miyoung-san desu. Who is that person? ……She is Ms. Kim Miyoung.5 N も mo tooも mo is added after a topic instead of は wa when the statement about the topic is the same as the previous topic.■ シュミットさんは 富ふじつう士通の 社しゃいん員です。キムさんも 富ふじつう士通の 社しゃいん員です。 Schmidt-san wa Fujitsu no shain desu. Kim-san mo Fujitsu no shain desu. Mr. Schmidt is a Fujitsu employee. Ms. Kim is a Fujitsu employee, too.
