Fujitsu Semiconductor Boosts Internet of Things as a College Curriculum

Fujitsu Semiconductor (Shanghai) Company Limited

Shanghai, January 05, 2011

Internet of things, one of the hottest key words of today, has been gradually coming into our lives. It is predicted that the internet of things will be the third smash hit that will have a profound impact on our lives after computers and Internets.

The coming up of Internet of Things poses a new challenge to the cultivation of our human resource. As a leader of semiconductor technology and a pioneer of the University Program, Fujitsu Semiconductor (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Fujitsu Semiconductor") turned his eyes in the field of setting up a new curriculum of internet of things in colleges and universities. In the recently held meeting of " the Construction of National High Education on Internet of Things, and the Second Meeting of the National Steering Group for Education of Internet of Things and Related Teachings", Fujitsu Semiconductor and the National Steering Group for Education of Internet of Things signed a memorandum on the construction of teaching system, textbooks, labs, faculty training and related activities/contests. This is an important initiative taken by Fujitsu Semiconductor for professional training in the new field.

In early 2010, the Ministry of Education issued a notice which encourages universities to set up internet of things as a major discipline. Since then, a lot of colleges and universities have applied for it, and about 40 of them have been approved of setting up such curriculum, including "Internet of Things engineering", "sensor network technologies" and " smart power grid". Internet of things is a comprehensive discipline which combines many areas, such as, computer science, electronic science/technology, communication engineering, software engineering, etc, therefore, how to train our professionals with a broad knowledge background in order to meet the market of internet of things remains a hot topic. In the recently held meeting of " Construction of National High Education on Internet of Things, and the Second Meeting of the National Steering Group for Education of Internet of Things and Related Teachings", the leaders from 31 universities in charge of internet of things education, together with representatives from the industry, exchanged their ideas and views in the areas of educational orientation of internet of things, practice internship, curriculum, and other major aspects.

The meeting was under the guidance and support from Science and Technology Committee, Computer Science and Technology Committee, Electronics and Electric Education Steering Committee, Chinese Institute of Electronics and others. Yao Quan, the member of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Prof Tan Zhenhui, vice president of Electronics and Electric Steering Committee, Prof Yang Fangchun, vice president of Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, and Xu Gang, the party secretary of new District of Wuxi Municipal Committee, were all made their presence at the meeting.

Miss Cao Miao, Marketing Director of Asia Pacific of Fujitsu Semiconductor, made a speech at the meeting: "Fujitsu Semiconductor has always attached great importance to higher education and personnel training in China. With the rapid development of internet of things, the demand for professional and technical personnel is increasing. To do our part, we work with the National Steering Group for Education of Internet of Things and Related Teachings, to promote the education of internet of things and train the faculties based on our complete product lines and advanced information technology ".

Mr. Ma Jianguo, the team leader of National Steering Group for Education of Internet of Things and Related Teachings, said: "Compared with the traditional single discipline, internet of things integrates almost all the knowledge in the information industry, whereas, Fujitsu Semiconductor possesses all-around information technologies and rich experience, we join hands with Fujitsu semiconductor in the education of internet of things, in a bid to jointly promote the internet of things in the campus".

As a leader in semiconductor industry in Asia-Pacific region, Fujitsu Semiconductor has always attached great importance to the cooperation with mainland universities and works hand in hand with many prestigious universities and committed ourselves in the education of China. Meanwhile, in order to further strengthen the cooperation, Fujitsu Semiconductor has passed down our forefront technologies and market information to the relevant professionals, to help the universities' training program. Since the establishment of the scholarships in 2003, Fujitsu Semiconductor has made continuous investments and efforts including: scholarships, Fujitsu lectures, Fujitsu Semiconductor Cup competitions, joint labs, joint curriculum, chip donations, college student innovative research projects and has achieved some success. Miss Cao Miao said, "Fujitsu Semiconductor will further deepen the cooperation with the mainland universities and expand cooperation areas in a more effective way".

The National Steering Group for Education of Internet of Things and Related Teachings was established in august 29, 2010, at the Tianjin University. It was co-founded by the universities which were approved by the government as the first universities holding internet of things curriculum. This group is under the guidance and support of Computer Science Technical Education Steering Committee and Electronic Information and Electrical education Steering Committee. As the first official institution in the area of internet of things high education, the purpose of this group is to unite all the related universities/institutions, to jointly develop our education in the area of internet of things.
