Smart Home App from Fujitsu Laboratories of America Wins Silver Prize at MobiCom 2015

New Unified Smartphone-Based Platform Technology Provides Solutions for Heterogeneity in Smart-Home Systems

Fujitsu Laboratories of America Inc.

September 15, 2015
Fujitsu Laboratories of America today announced that at the 21st International Conference on Mobile Computing and Networking (MobiCom 2015) held in Paris from September 7 – 10, 2015, it was awarded the silver prize for the newly developed technology (smartphone-based platform to tackle heterogeneity in smart-home systems) that addresses the heterogeneity problem in today’s smart-home systems. Built on open standards and public proprietary APIs, Fujitsu's technology acts as a gateway to the smart-home and based on user preferences, provides a vendor agnostic seamless interaction to multiple appliances and devices located in the home.
The recent advances in smart-home technologies, including broad penetration of Internet-connected smart appliances and IoT devices such as remotely controllable LED lights, thermostats, cameras, motion sensors, and door locks, has changed the way we interact with home appliances and perform our daily activities. However, the significant heterogeneity in the emerging smart appliances and IoT devices has led to fragmented smart-home systems in which each single appliance vendor provides proprietary solution for specific connectivity and user experience. To address this problem, Fujitsu Laboratories of America developed the first smartphone-based platform for multi-vendor smart-home appliances that provides a unified solution and a user interface tuned to the features of each appliance using open source software.
“Through our advanced human-centric research we are paving the way for seamless interaction between users and the technology around them”, said Daiki Masumoto, Senior Vice President at Fujitsu Laboratories of America. “We are pleased that our research has received recognition at the premier international forum focused on wireless networks and related technologies”.
The technology platform also provides an API to developers to build cross-device applications with a unified solution. One example implemented in the app is an automated demand response application. This is a service to receive energy-usage reduction requests and user incentive information from utility companies which is based on user defined settings to automatically control multiple smart-home devices, e.g., turn off lights or/and decrease the set-point temperature in the thermostat. Other applications which benefit from the Fujitsu's technology include home energy management, family healthcare and home security.
