Reducing Prtr Emissions through Improvements in Production Yield and Changes to Raw Materials

In FY 2016, Fujitsu Kasei Limited worked to improve the quality of the base materials for computer casing components and the working environments for various processes. The changes not only boosted production yield in the company's painting process but also helped reduce the amount of PRTR-targeted substances in its paints by bringing overall paint consumption down.

Switching to paint materials containing fewer PRTR substances and implementing technological measures to improve paint coating film thickness, among other efforts, reduced the amount of PRTR emissions under chemical substance management by a total of 1.4 tons (7.0 tons to 5.6 tons): Toluene levels fell by 0.9 tons, xylene by 0.2 tons, and ethylbenzene by 0.2 tons.

At the beginning of the fiscal year, the company identified the issues that it would need to address in its efforts to make yield improvements and also reduce paint consumption. The various improvement measures resulted in the above achievements. In FY 2017, the company will continue to reduce PRTR emissions to address more issues.

Reducing Chemical Use by Limiting Reuse of Ion-exchange Resin in Pure Water Production Equipment

At the Fujitsu Nagano Plant, pure water production equipment is used to supply pure water to the printed circuit board production line. We noticed improvements in the quality of our raw water and have worked to reduce the number of times ion-exchange resins are recycled in the pure water production equipment. This effort reduces the environmental burden by limiting the amounts of chemicals (hydrochloric acid and caustic soda), water, waste water, and steam used in the recycling process. We are also targeting cost reductions in this approach as well. As part of this initiative, we have exchanged information with the pure water equipment manufacturer and carried out water quality surveys. Our daily checks of the electric conductivity of the water and the manufactured pure water have confirmed that there has been no decline in the performance of the ion-exchange resin.

This effort has achieved annual reductions of 89 tons for hydrochloric acid and 200 tons for caustic soda. Along with these lower emissions of chemical substances, the plant has reduced wastewater by 17,000 m3/year, steam by 185 tons/year, and electricity by 38 MWh/year. The economic benefits have saved 16.49 million yen annually.
