School Pupils Get Hands-On Business Experience

Every Tuesday, a group of high school pupils meet to discuss the business they are building. They cover their financials, suppliers, transport and marketing issues amongst others. Gathered in a circle the atmosphere is light but the talk is serious.

Week8 Getting to grips with planning

Getting to grips with planning was the order of the day, the students had to commence work on a business plan which included taking their first look at finances, they currently have sponsorship of R1500 to start them off, but soon realised when looking at budgeting for their event that money does not go as far as first thought.

Fujitsu Services posts record financial results

Fujitsu Services Holdings PLC, one of Europe’s leading IT services companies, today announced its financial results for 2005/06. The company made an operating profit before rationalisation of £153.7 million and a profit before tax of £154.3 million in the year ended 31 March 2006, an increase of 47% from 2004/05. The company’s order book has grown to £6.5 billion. These numbers reflect International Financial Reporting Standards and comparisons are on a like for like basis.

This week the students were visited by Bill Keenan, VISP Team Manager who gave an informative presentation of the do’s and don’ts of setting up a company website, which is not as straight forward as some people think. Bill then gave them access to software which will allow them to easily build the site themselves.

As this is a holiday week our students asked if they could come in from 10.00 to 3.00 and it was agreed – What dedication and commitment.

This week the thinking really started, the students decided that they would like to hold an under 18's disco in order to fund their organisations set up costs, they asked if it would be possible to hold it in the Fujitsu building, then started discussing practical logistics, area's covered were:

8 students from Alexandra Township School and 7 students from Kind Edward School attended a meet and great get to know each other session at Fujitsu’s Rivonia offices. Nikki Carnegie-Floyd, Head of Marketing & Alliances, Fujitsu SA introduced herself and Vanessa Tyler who will both act in the capacity of Business Advisors to the students for the next 9 months. The students were given an overview of Fujitsu’s global group and then an overview of the programme and were also presented the Fujitsu Executive team who will help to support the programme

Fujitsu has set up its Consulting Division in South Africa to further grow their regional core capabilities. André February and Ugan Naidoo will be heading up the new division based in the Fujitsu offices in Johannesburg. Both bring a wealth of knowledge and experience with them having spent many years as Management Consultants for a number of large technology and professional services organisations.
