Estate Implements Fujitsu Palm Vein Authentication Technology for Condominium Entrance Access Security

Johannesburg, November 18 — Fujitsu's contactless palm vein authentication technology is now being implemented for front entrance security at various condominiums being constructed in Japan.

This is the first residential use in metropolitan Tokyo of Fujitsu's technology for entry security and is believed to be one of the first in the world using contactless authentication.

The absence of hand contact minimises hygiene concerns and provides better security. This is because palm vein technology is hardly affected by external factors such as cold weather, injuries and skin abrasions.

On entry to the building, the resident holds the palm of the hand over the device without making hand contact. Residents then input their room number into a keypad.

Palm vein patterns are read and compared to a pre-registered pattern. If the pattern matches, the resident's identity is verified and the door is automatically opened.

The device is user-friendly as scanning is completed in a manner which is natural for the user.

This method of identification is difficult to forge since the biometric source, the palm veins, are inside the body. Compared to veins in the fingers or the back of the hand, palm vein patterns are also more complex and stable.

In contrast, fingerprint authentication can be hindered by friction or dryness of the skin. Another method, iris scanning, can be difficult depending on the size of the user's eye, thereby preventing successful registration and verification at times. Contactless technology is seen as the preferred option.

The technology has also been adopted for use in financial institutions, hospitals and universities in Japan.

In testing the system, Fujitsu collected data samples of 140 000 palm vein patterns from the hands of 70 000 people and verified the reliability of its authentication technology. There were no cases in this data sample for which the technology was not applicable, demonstrating its high rate of applicability.
