Bank of Spain

Bank of Spain

“The Bank of Spain has made a commitment to transparency in financial information. It has therefore adopted XBRL™ as a standard for its reporting. It is also promoting the use of XBRL™ by all of the organizations involved in the distribution chain of finance and accounting information.”

About The Bank of Spain

The Bank of Spain promotes interoperability in the financial system so as to make information more accessible and transparent.

The Bank of Spain is committed to the implantation of eXtensible Business Reporting Language as a standard format for sharing financial information.

The new universal standard for disseminating finance and accounting information, XBRL™ came about as the result of a joint effort by more than 300 international organizations to optimize the mechanisms for producing, divulging and analyzing financial information.

As a first initiative towards implementing this financial reporting standard, the Bank of Spain has designed a Master Plan that involves different areas within the organization (Regulation, Balances Central, Balance of Payments, Laundering of Capital).

In order to develop the projects in each of the areas involved within the Master Plan, the entity has designed a functional and technical architecture which will be responsible for processing the information in XBRL™ format which must be used.

Within the framework of implementation of the designed technical architecture, in which both the functional services and technical infrastructure services are included, Fujitsu España Services has been selected to develop the technical infrastructure services necessary for processing documents in XBRL™.

Fujitsu España Services bases these infrastructure services on its XBRL™ “Interstage XWand” processor, which forms part of the Interstage suite of products. These services, implemented in .NET and Java technology, will provide the proper programming interface for the development of XBRL™ projects within the entity.

Fujitsu's Solution

The solution that Fujitsu España Services. S.A, is presenting to the Bank of Spain to assist in the implementation of the Master Plan for adoption of XBRL™ within its organization is based on the development of XBRL™ infrastructure services, developed in both .Net and in Java technology, with the following characteristics / functionalities:

  • Loading of XBRL™ taxonomies: loading into the memory the data model corresponding to the DTS (Discoverable Taxonomy Set)
  • Validation of the taxonomy with respect to the XBRL™ 2.1 specification.
  • Loading of XBRL™ reports: loading the XBRL™ data model associated with an instance document into the memory.
  • Validation of instances: with respect to a taxonomy in accordance with the XBRL™ 2.1 specification.
  • Generation of information for presentation: makes it possible to process an XBRL™ report for publication of its data or for transformation into a different format.
  • Access to the XBRL™ taxonomy storage repositories necessary for the processes to load and validate XBRL™ taxonomies.
  • Access to the in-memory cache systems of taxonomies, thereby improving performance of the processing of XBRL™ instances.
  • Handling of the data model of XBRL™ taxonomies and instances: tree of labels, calculation, presentation and references, creation and handling of instances, etc.

Interstage XWand

The services developed by Fujitsu España Services. S.A are based on the Fujitsu XBRL™ processor: Interstage XWand.

XWand, which forms part of the Fujitsu Interstage suite of products, provides development and execution environments that are 100% compatible with XBRL™ 2.0 and 2.1 specifications.

It includes a set of APIs that make it possible to rapidly develop and deploy applications for processing XBRL™ documents.

It is available for Java and Microsoft .NET environments, which means that the solutions developed using XWand may be implemented with countless possibilities, from Java Servlets and EJBs to legacy applications.

The main characteristics are:

  • A decrease in the time required for development of XBRL™ applications.
  • A rich interface: the complete APIs make it possible for developers to work on the application layer, leaving out the XBRL™ layer. This allows developers to concentrate on solving the problem.
  • The encapsulation of functionalities and the guarantee of XWand evolution in accordance with changes in the XBRL™ specification, which provides everything necessary for the deployment of XBRL™ solutions.
  • It includes Java, C# and COM interfaces.
