<<< Optimising server performance has improved system efficiency and negated the need for new equipment at this stage >>>
Francois Greeff, Senior Manager Information Technology, Nissan
Nissan South Africa hosts a busy SAP ERP solution on a multi-vendor hardware platform consisting of 16 servers. Nissan wanted to define and measure the performance parameters of this solution to determine whether the solution was performing optimally. Nissan’s objective was to identify bottlenecks and potential bottlenecks within their overall environment with a view to "right sizing" their environment to handle capacity constraints, should they arise. In essence, Nissan was evaluating the need to potentially invest in additional servers within their environment.
Nissan briefed Fujitsu Enterprise partner, Shoden Data Systems on their requirements and after evaluating these, Shoden recommended running the Fujitsu System Inspector, a Fujitsu-developed tool that maps out demand and utilization over a fixed period, highlighting peaks and bottlenecks within the entire environment.
The System Inspector was run over a period of 40 days, which included two month-end cycles. The data gathered by the System Inspector was sent to Germany for analysis by Fujitsu’s SAP experts. Performance was charted against workloads After analyzing the data, Nissan, Shoden and Fujitsu held an international video conference to review the feedback. The recommendation that was made after analyzing the data was that Nissan should not add any more hardware to the environment, but that Nissan institute a series of checks and balances within their environment.

System Inspector data showed where utilization profiles and processes should be changed, and it also highlighted potential problem areas and task sequencing issues.
"Fujitsu's Systems Inspector gave us far more insight into our environment and resolved issues that had been bothering us for quite some time," says Francois Greef, senior manager Information technology at Nissan. "Thanks to the partnership between Shoden Data Systems and Fujitsu, we were able to save around R 5 000 000.00 in capital expenditure. We were also able to focus our attention on the issues that are really important to our business.
Nissan have contracted to conduct an annual assessment on their environment once a year, using the System Inspector and they will use the tool to guide and inform their future technology refreshments and upgrades, as well as to manage the implementation of SAP upgrades.
The System Inspector has proven highly successful in limiting server sprawl and in scoping Nissan's SAP environment as well as in identifying potential problem areas within the highly complex multi-vendor environment
