Mobile Backhaul

Demand for higher speed wireless data services continues to surge as users find new applications. To tap into this revenue opportunity, wireless service providers are deploying 3G and 4G wireless technologies and significantly increasing the number of cell sites and boosting the bandwidth capacity of the backhaul network.

Mobile operators are focusing on their backhaul infrastructure, regardless of whether they backhaul it themselves or outsource to another service provider. This is because the backhaul network has a significant impact on OpEx in the areas of operations, administration and management (OAM). The traditional TDM-based mobile backhaul network inherently provides deterministic connections with the lowest possible latency, highest network availability and security, and essentially no data loss. Since wireless standards were designed with these types of networks in mind, a packet-based network architecture suitable for 4G data services must also meet the stringent requirements of these TDM networks.

Fujitsu offers complete solutions and professional services to support the stringent requirements for mobile backhaul networks. Connection-oriented Ethernet (COE) is ideally suited for 3G and 4G mobile backhaul network applications. Delivered via our FLASHWAVE Packet Optical Networking Platforms, COE combines the desirable attributes of SONET with the benefits of Ethernet. By choosing a COE solution for backhaul infrastructure, operators get deterministic precision QoS, security, and reliability as well as Layer 2 aggregation, scalable bandwidth and statistical multiplexing. COE can be delivered directly over fiber or can optimize an existing SONET infrastructure for 3G and 4G Ethernet-based services, while efficiently transporting legacy TDM-based 2G services.
