Canadian Tire to Deploy Fujitsu U-Scan Self-Checkout

Deal Marks the Largest Non-Grocery Rollout of Fujitsu Self-Checkout Systems

Frisco, TX, October 24, 2007 — Fujitsu Transaction Solutions Inc. today announced that Canadian Tire will install Fujitsu’s U-Scan Genesis self-checkout system at more than 100 of its 468 stores across Canada.

"Customer service is a top priority at Canadian Tire and the Fujitsu self-checkout systems will provide a new and enhanced method to efficiently serve our customers," said Glenn Butt, senior vice president, store design and support, Canadian Tire. "Fujitsu has been a valuable technology partner, and we are confident that U-Scan will be a hit among our dealers and customers."

Canadian Tire has been testing the U-Scan systems in a proof of concept (POC) that included both English- and French-language stores since October 2006. As a result, the company will begin a formal rollout of self-checkout systems in late 2007 or early 2008. This installation follows a 2005 Fujitsu rollout that replaced Canadian Tire’s point-of-sale (POS) hardware with Fujitsu’s TeamPoS 2000 M units.

U-Scan Genesis is the latest version of Fujitsu’s successful U-Scan self-checkout family. Unveiled in January 2007, the enhanced system offers retailers more flexibility, scalability and reliability. It features a compact, space-saving footprint, and is available in 1-, 2- and 4-bag modular configurations. The system is expected to rapidly expand into markets beyond the traditional grocery sector, where Fujitsu has long been a technology leader.

"Canadian Tire is a very significant customer for Fujitsu, and this project will be our largest non-grocery deployment for our new U-Scan Genesis systems," said Peter Sciberras, general manager and vice president of sales, Canada, Fujitsu Transaction Solutions. "Canadian Tire continues to be a leader in the Canadian retail market and we believe that self-checkout will help them build on their great brand and store operations model. Self-checkout has been gaining popularity in Canada for obvious reasons: faster checkout times and improved customer service. Canadian Tire joins our growing list of U-Scan self-checkout clients in Canada."
