Fujitsu Provides Staples with Next-Generation POS Hardware and Extends Services Contract

Collaborative Relationship Designed to Enhance Shopper Experience with Faster Throughput, Multiple Touchpoints and Mobile Technology

Frisco, TX, January 24, 2007 — Fujitsu Transaction Solutions Inc. announced today that Staples Inc. (Nasdaq: SPLS), the world’s largest office products company, will deploy nearly 8,000 point-of-sale (POS) terminals in the U.S., Canada and Europe and extend its in-store technology services agreement across the same geographies with Fujitsu Transaction Solutions Inc.

The new three-year technology and services contract, effective immediately, covers about 1,800 stores and is expected to continue to reduce in-store technology costs while bolstering customer service under the collaborative relationship Staples and Fujitsu have enjoyed for more than 20 years.

"These agreements reflect our expanding and long-standing relationship with Fujitsu," said Brian Light, chief information officer at Staples, Inc. "The POS upgrade leverages the latest available technology to enhance customers’ shopping experience, while our services agreement continues to raise the bar with a balance of cost reductions and performance metrics."

The hardware deal includes a combination of TeamPoS 2000 and TeamPoS 3000 POS terminals, as well as iPAD handheld wireless terminals for inventory management and line-busting applications. The TeamPoS 3000 offers improved reliability, faster throughput, enhanced serviceability and support for the latest peripheral technology. Maintenance and integration are simplified through consistent configuration and components across the product family, including terminals and kiosk models.

The Fujitsu/Staples service-level agreement (SLA), which the companies pioneered in 1999, continues to drive cost and performance improvements year-over-year across a broad range of metrics. Unlike traditional retailer-vendor agreements, the SLA creates a relationship under which both parties focus on identifying the right balance of reduced costs and improved performance to deliver the best impact for Staples store and customers.

Fujitsu will continue to stage, manage and install all in-store computer configurations, including hardware upgrades and replacement, as well as product procurement. Fujitsu also will maintain multi-vendor technology devices, provide tactical help desk support and include services such as wiring, refurbishment and disposal. The agreement also extends into Staples' new Copy & Print Shops.

We are proud of the transformational results we’ve been able to achieve through our relationship with Staples," said Doug Wallace, senior vice president sales and client management at Fujitsu Transaction Solutions. "We continue to evolve our service delivery and operational performance models to further differentiate Staples by helping them provide better service to their customers."
