Fujitsu Unveils New U-Scan Genesis Self-checkout at NRF 2007
Advanced Self-checkout Systems Offer Improved Flexibility, Scalability and Reliability; Ripe for Expanded Use in Non-Grocery Formats
Frisco, TX, January 10, 2007 — Fujitsu Transaction Solutions Inc. today announced the U-Scan Genesis™ family of advanced self-checkout systems, available in mid-2007. The U-Scan Genesis will be demonstrated in booth #1613 at the National Retail Federation (NRF) 96th Annual Convention & Expo, Jan. 15-16, 2007.
Completely re-designed and built from the ground up using Fujitsu’s engineering and technologies, U-Scan Genesis offers retailers new features, flexibility, scalability and reliability. With its new compact, space-saving footprint, U-Scan Genesis is expected to rapidly expand into markets beyond the traditional grocery sector, where Fujitsu has led for many years. Retail formats from larger stores such as mass merchandisers, do-it-yourself (DIY) and warehouse stores, to more space-constrained drug, discount and specialty retail stores, are expected to find the new U-Scan Genesis’ features and compact design a significant improvement over other self-checkout options.
"U-Scan Genesis truly represents best-in-class design, component technology and customer input, reflecting countless man-years of operational experience," said Paul Burel, self-checkout strategic marketing leader at Fujitsu Transaction Solutions. "Significant advances in software and hardware design bring dramatic improvements in ease-of-use and sustained higher transaction throughput for both retailers and shoppers. Ultimately, this translates to faster checkout, less down time, more sales per square foot, better competitive differentiation and an overall higher ROI for retailers."
U-Scan Genesis offers a wide portfolio of hardware and software technology advances including:
- Small Footprint – redesigned to offer the one of the smallest self-checkout footprints available, making it attractive for retail formats that have limited floor space.
- Retail-hardened Fujitsu TeamPoS 3000 terminals – designed to withstand the rigors of high-volume checkout environments with easy serviceability.
- Two-handed scanning – enables shoppers to scan items one after the other and then place in the bag to further accelerate the check-out process. Shoppers do not have to scan and bag one item before scanning and bagging another.
- "Above scanner" bill and coin accepting and dispensing units located together – speeds the transaction process and reduces the chance of customers leaving money behind.
- ATM-style "follow me" LED lighting – guides users through the checkout process.
- More intuitive customer interfaces support up to 12 languages - makes the checkout process more efficient.
- Fujitsu’s new F53 bill dispensing unit – improves dispensing rates while reducing bill jams – the most common self-checkout service and maintenance issue.
- Coin hopper or coin canister dispensing units – allows retailer to choose the option that’s best for their environment.
- Metrologic scanner/scale – offers accurate first-pass scan rates with 6-sided, 360° scanning.
Integrating Fujitsu’s Mobile Attendant software and Fujitsu iPAD mobile devices with U-Scan Genesis allows retailers to either supplement or completely eliminate the need for a separate physical attendant station, enabling cashiers to move from lane to lane to assist customers as needed. Using the iPAD, cashiers also can perform other checkout functions across the front-end such as line busting, remote approvals, price check and item verifications.
The new U-Scan Genesis will be available in 1-, 2- and 4-bag modular configurations, both with tiered and non-tiered options providing more space for larger item handling, tall item racks and multiple bag stand configurations. Belted, carousel and multi-lane payment station versions will also be available. U-Scan Genesis is fully ADA and RoHS compliant. Serviceability is dramatically improved with 100 percent front-accessible slide-out mounted components, allowing critical internal hardware to be removed in five minutes or less.
