Fujitsu Unveils Pervasive Retailing™ Self-Checkout Features
Two-handed Scanning and Virtual POS Features Make Scanning Easier and Accelerate the Speed-to-Market
San Diego, CA, January 30, 2006 — Fujitsu Transaction Solutions Inc. today unveiled significant additions to its Pervasive Retailing Solutions – the grocery industry’s first two-handed scanning software for belted self-checkout systems and a virtual point-of-sale (VPOS) feature that enhances integration to POS applications.
Two-handed Scanning
The new two-handed scanning feature enables shoppers to scan items one after the other without waiting for the scale to validate the weight of items before scanning the next item. Shoppers will find the system much easier to use than traditional self-checkout processes, therefore speeding-up the self-checkout process. This allows a greater number of customers to be processed and generates a higher return on investment (ROI) for the retailer.
The new feature is initially available on the Fujitsu U-Scan MAX Single belted unit and will be available on all U-Scan models during 2006.
"This new feature for the U-Scan self-checkout system reflects our continued commitment to invest in and develop innovative solutions for retailers and their customers," said Paul Rosen, vice president and general manager of Fujitsu’s U-Scan business. "Using both hands makes scanning easier and is more intuitive for the customer, which increases the adoption and usage of self-checkout systems."
Virtual POS
The VPOS feature is a messaging framework, an element of Fujitsu’s Pervasive Retailing Toolkit. This feature speeds up the initial integration process and reduces the support necessary to incorporate POS updates and enhancements. In a recent U-Scan self-checkout deployment, the initial store implementation time was reduced by more than half, due in part to Fujitsu’s VPOS. Leveraging VPOS, the first system was live in the store just 57 days from the point of decision.
"Fujitsu’s VPOS is another example of how the Pervasive Retailing Toolkit is minimizing the time, cost and risk of creating real-time interoperability between disparate applications," said Austen Mulinder, president and chief executive officer, Fujitsu Transaction Solutions Inc. "This simplifies the integration of new technologies and significantly reduces the time-to-market for generating new business."
