A&P Gives Nod to Fujitsu for POS and Self-checkout Services

Three-year Deal Consolidates Chain-wide Service Across U.S. and Canada

Washington, D.C., February 13, 2005 — The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, Inc. (NYSE: GAP) has selected Fujitsu Transaction Solutions Inc. for a three-year services agreement covering all A&P's point-of-sale (POS) terminals, peripherals and U-Scan self-checkout systems in the U.S. and Canada.

The agreement includes on-site store maintenance, U-Scan equipment staging and integration, and installation and removal for all new store openings and closings as required. Fujitsu will provide services for IBM POS terminals and peripherals, IBM in-store processors and peripherals and Fujitsu U-Scan self-checkout lanes.

To date, A&P has deployed Fujitsu U-Scan self-checkout systems in approximately 165 stores across its chains in North America.

"Fujitsu has compiled a great services track record with A&P in Canada over the past several years, providing service for their multi-vendor hardware platforms," said Doug Wallace, senior vice president of client operations at Fujitsu. "When A&P decided to consolidate its services vendors under one organization, we modeled our proposal after the great success we have enjoyed in Canada. That history gave us a high degree of confidence that we could deliver both the quality of service and the guaranteed cost reductions for them over the term of the contract."

Founded in 1859, A&P, one of the nation's first supermarket chains, is today among North America's largest. The company operates 650 stores in 10 states, the District of Columbia and Ontario, Canada under the trade names A&P, Waldbaum's, The Food Emporium, Super Foodmart, Super Fresh, Farmer Jack, Sav-A-Center, Dominion, The Barn Markets, Food Basics and Ultra Food & Drug.
