Sherm's Thunderbird Markets Installs Self-Checkout
Oregon Independent is First StoreNext U-Scan/ISS45 Site
Washington, D.C., February 13, 2005 — Sherm's Thunderbird Markets Inc., a four-store, family owned independent grocer based in Medford, Ore., has implemented the Fujitsu U-Scan self-checkout system from StoreNext Retail Technologies LLC. The announcement was made at the Food Marketing Institute's (FMI) 2005 Marketechnics show in Washington, D.C.
Sherm's inaugural installation at the Thunderbird Market in Roseburg, Ore., went live in late October 2004 and has seen quick shopper acceptance and take-up, according to store manager Steve Rolston.
Sherm's stores offer a combination of high service, aggressive pricing and big-box positioning, but Rolston said that self-checkout will offer even more shopper service options to his customers for faster checkout during the busiest times. Competitive factors also came into play.
"All of the large local chains such as Albertsons, Safeway and Fred Meyer have self-checkout," said Rolston. "Although we do very high volumes with a very loyal customer base, we felt that StoreNext's self-checkout solution would help us compete better while enhancing shopper convenience."
"We're bullish on the prospects for self-checkout growth in the independent market," said Ray Carlin, president and CEO of StoreNext. "It gives independents a competitive weapon and serves the needs of today's time-pressed consumers."
In addition to the new U-Scan system, Sherm's Roseburg location also employs StoreNext's ISS45 POS store management software and Fujitsu TeamPoS 2000 POS terminals. The Roseburg store has 13 traditional checkout lanes and the four-lane U-Scan system with attendant station. As Sherm's three other stores are converted to the ISS45 system, the regional independent expects to install U-Scan in those as well.
Sales, service and support to Sherm's is provided by Seattle-based InStore Technology, which specializes in point-of-sale systems for grocery stores.
