Best Buy Canada Awards $3.9-million Point-of-sale Systems Contract to Fujitsu

State-of-the-art Upgrade Prepares Best Buy and Future Shop Stores For 'Future of Retailing'

Vancouver, BC, March 23, 2004 — Fujitsu Consulting (Canada) today announced it has been selected by Best Buy Canada Ltd. to be their integration partner for the company's multi-million dollar Canadian Point-of-Sale (POS) Replacement Program (CPR). Once complete, the program will replace the current, aging store systems and provide the company, which operates all Best Buy and Future Shop stores in Canada, with an integrated suite of store applications and the infrastructure to quickly implement future retail technologies.

The CPR project will ensure that core applications are fully integrated with one another to provide the company with next generation POS functionality. The suite of applications - store inventory, pricing, promotion and rebates management, sales audit and signage systems - will provide a more responsive and efficient retail environment.

"Customer service will take a significant step forward with the deployment of CPR," said Bill Akam, business information officer and vice president, Best Buy Canada Ltd. "CPR is the last big step in our program to build a platform capable of supporting the continued growth of our two brands in Canada."

At the centre of the CPR program is the integration of a new custom POS system in development by Best Buy Canada's parent company, Best Buy Co., Inc. The application is being built on Fujitsu's GlobalSTORE POS framework, a component-based software architecture that enables the development, implementation and maintenance of retail business functions. The GlobalSTORE POS framework is developed by Frisco, Texas-based Fujitsu Transaction Solutions, a sister company to Fujitsu Consulting, specializing in retail technology lifecycle solutions.

"Retail environments are moving into a future in which every POS transaction cascades throughout the system, updating everything from inventory and shelf stock checks, providing bricks and mortar integration with the Web, through to business intelligence applications," said Michael Long, senior vice president, Fujitsu Consulting.

"By undertaking the CPR project now, Best Buy is positioning itself to allow customers to buy anything, anytime, anywhere; allowing the customer to choose their preferred buying experience."

The program called for the integration of a complex suite of applications. Best Buy needed to supplement their existing base of developers, analysts and project managers to meet the project's tight timelines.

Fujitsu Consulting was selected as the consulting partner to provide expertise in all project areas, involving approximately 30 contracted consultants, in addition to Best Buy staff already assigned and working on the project. The Fujitsu Consulting portion of the work is valued at $3.9 million over the next 12 months.
