Dress Barn entrusts next-generation POS to Fujitsu

TeamPoS 2000 M and managed services complete lifecycle solution for almost 800 women's specialty apparel stores nationwide

New York, NY, January 12, 2004 — The Dress Barn, Inc. (NASDAQ: DBRN) has selected Fujitsu Transaction Solutions Inc. as its strategic partner for point-of-sale hardware systems and retail technology lifecycle services. Fujitsu will supply more than 2,000 TeamPoS 2000 M terminals to replace Dress Barn's older-generation POS systems. The companies also signed a five-year agreement covering a complete range of managed services.

Dress Barn operates almost 800 stores in 45 states. Founded in 1962, the company is one of the nation's leading women's specialty apparel retailers offering quality career and casual fashion to the working woman at value prices.

"This is the single largest IT project and expenditure in the history of our company, so when we made the strategic decision to move our chain-wide POS systems to the next generation of Windows-based technology, we were determined to select a partner we could trust completely for years to come," said David R. Jaffe, Dress Barn president and CEO. "Fujitsu has a very focused retail technology lifecycle model with strong customer referenceability. It is clear to us why Fujitsu has such strong market momentum for retail store systems. We believe great service should be the rule, not the exception. Fujitsu's lifecycle solutions and strong customer-service orientation are ideally aligned with Dress Barn's mission."

"Dress Barn has a very aggressive target for rolling out the new POS systems to its stores - about 100 per week," said Austen Mulinder, president and CEO of Fujitsu Transaction Solutions. "But we were able to demonstrate that Fujitsu is more than up to the challenge, having achieved real results on fast-track projects for customers such as Ross Stores - where we recently completed more than 560 stores in six weeks; or the United States Postal Service - where we installed over 3,000 sites at a rates of up to 31 stores per night and 114 stores per week."

Dress Barn's Jaffe said that the Fujitsu systems will add new functionality across the chain, particularly for applications such as store marketing, merchandising and customer service.

The latest model in Fujitsu's TeamPoS line of point-of-sale terminals, the TeamPoS 2000 M is based on the Intel Pentium M processor. The TeamPoS 2000 M is designed for easy remote management to reduce total cost of ownership.

The new terminals are expected to be rolled out to all 2,000 lanes in the Dress Barn chain over a two-month period starting in June. Services to be provided under the agreement include project management, integration, staging, installation and maintenance. Fujitsu will also maintain existing third-party hardware equipment.
