Regal Entertainment Group awards "Oscar" for POS systems, taps Fujitsu for 1200 touch-screen concession terminals
New York, NY, January 12, 2004 — Regal Entertainment Group has awarded an Oscar to Fujitsu Transaction Solutions Inc. following a successful six-month pilot of more than 70 new point-of-sale systems at theatre concession stands in seven Regal locations.
Next up at the big-screen giant is a 1,200-system rollout of Fujitsu's TeamPoS 2000 terminals, supporting the Linux operating system, at nearly 200 cinemas where a technology refresh should be completed by early May. The systems will include a color touch-screen terminal, magnetic card reader for credit card customers, cash drawer and receipt printer.
Regal, based in Knoxville, Tenn., is the world's largest motion picture exhibitor, operating 6,041 screens in 549 locations nationwide. Frisco, Texas-based Fujitsu Transaction Solutions Inc. is the "lifecycle solutions" provider of retailing technologies and a wholly owned subsidiary of $38 billion Fujitsu Limited.
According to J.E. Henry, Regal's senior vice president and chief information officer, the theatre concession environment presents one of the most challenging retail arenas for ease-of-use and system reliability and durability, due to extremely high volumes during peak usage times such as weekends and holidays. If a "down" terminal creates long lines at the concession stand, it can create an unacceptable customer experience, he said.
"During the third week of October, Fujitsu systems won the Oscar for 'best performance in a sticky situation,'" Henry said. "They successfully passed a creatively devised, 32-oz. Coke spill-test and were not only easy to clean, but continued to perform without a hitch throughout the holiday season. The pilot terminals performed more than a quarter-million transactions flawlessly."
"This win is further testimony to Fujitsu's focused retail technology lifecycle model and the market momentum we've been rapidly gaining over the last 18 months," said Austen Mulinder, president and CEO of Fujitsu Transaction Solutions. "It follows on the heels of our recent win for self-service ticketing terminals at Regal cinemas and clearly establishes Regal as the leader in technology applications for the entertainment industry."
In August 2003, Regal and Fujitsu announced a separate agreement for development and deployment of Regal 'Express' self-service terminals that combine cash and ticket dispensing, printing of tickets purchased online and other customer services based on Fujitsu's ATM platform and media-handling technology.
Both agreements are part of a system-wide technology overhaul at Regal that ultimately will provide corporate headquarters with real-time access to integrated data from the box office, Fandango, customer-activated terminals and concession systems via a Web-enabled application.
"Fujitsu has demonstrated flexibility, creative thinking and assistance in every engagement, and the relationship we have with them is one of the best I've experienced in 34 years in the IT industry. We are totally impressed by their retail systems," concluded Henry.
