Fujitsu Packet Optical Networking Platforms Win Wireless Backhaul Distinction Awards
FLASHWAVE® 9500 and FLASHWAVE 4100 ES Platforms Recognized for Connection-oriented Ethernet Contributions to 4G Wireless Evolution (4GWE)
Richardson, TX, October 19, 2009 — Fujitsu, a leading provider of business, information technology, and communications solutions, announced today that
Technology Marketing Corporation (TMC) and Crossfire Media have awarded the Fujitsu FLASHWAVE® 9500 and FLASHWAVE 4100 ES Packet Optical Networking Platforms (Packet ONPs) with First Annual Wireless Backhaul Distinction Awards. The platforms were
recognized for their market-leading deployment history, new EoX Gateway and Connection-oriented Ethernet (COE) capabilities,
and overall commitment to advance the 4G Wireless Evolution (4GWE).
“Next-generation wireless technology requires a next-generation approach to mobile backhaul to economically transport Ethernet
circuits from cell sites to their mobile telephone switching office (MTSO),” said Rich Tehrani, CEO of TMC. “The Fujitsu FLASHWAVE
packet optical networking platforms impressed our panel of judges and we certainly hope to see more innovation from Fujitsu
in the future.”
The FLASHWAVE 4100 ES Micro Packet ONP has been deployed at thousands of cell sites across North America to support T1-based
backhaul for legacy 2G/3G services. Recently announced COE capabilities add the ability to provide high-performance Ethernet-based backhaul services without the cost of building an overlay access
network. The FLASHWAVE 9500 Packet ONP was recognized for its new EoX Gateway functionality that can aggregate and switch circuits from Ethernet over SONET/SDH (EoS), T1/T3 (EoPDH), WDM (Eoλ), and fiber (EoF). This
capability allows the FLASHWAVE 9500 Packet ONP to act as a complete backhaul, aggregation and service delivery solution for
legacy T1-based backhaul and next-generation Ethernet.
“Nearly 75% of cell sites have more than one generation of wireless technology, which drives a requirement for both Ethernet-
and T1-based mobile backhaul,” said Doug Moore, senior vice president of sales, marketing and services at Fujitsu Network
Communications. “Our unique Micro Packet ONP and EoX Gateway solution supports both transport technologies in a manner that
provides the very stringent performance requirements for full-service mobile backhaul. We’re pleased that TMC has recognized
our company and Packet ONP solutions for the leadership we have shown in driving the adoption of Connection-oriented Ethernet
for mobile backhaul.”
The Fujitsu FLASHWAVE 9500 Packet ONP offers the modular integration of COE, along with pluggable ROADM and SONET transport
technologies, in a single addressable optical networking class element. The platform’s COE capabilities include a patent-pending
universal switch fabric that allows both SONET/SDH and Ethernet traffic to be transported in its native format to create a
universal optical infrastructure that can support both legacy 2G/3G wireless traffic as well as next-generation 4G services.
The platform’s integrated COE features deliver private-line quality packet aggregation and connectivity services with the
proven operational robustness of optical networking, including transport-class software and database management, management
interface functionality, and precision fault sectionalization.
The FLASHWAVE 4100 ES joined the Fujitsu family of Packet ONPs with the addition of COE capabilities (announced last week). This compact, modular Micro Packet ONP offers high concentrations of DS1, DS3 or Connect-oriented Ethernet services over
OC-3/12/48 (Ethernet over SONET, or EoS) or native Ethernet over fiber (EoF). The FLASHWAVE 4100 ES platform is environmentally
hardened to operate within the harsh environment of a cell site, and deployment options include standard rack mounting in
addition to a number of innovative compact outside-plant cabinet enclosures for pad, pole, and H-frame mounting.
