Fujitsu and Hammerhead Systems Announce Packet-Enabled Transport Solution for Wireless Backhaul
Layer 2.5 Pseudowire Technology to Improve Efficiency and Reduce Cost of Wireless Networks Today and in the Future
New Orleans, LA, March 14, 2005 — Fujitsu Network Communications Inc., a leading supplier of IT and networking solutions, and Hammerhead™ Systems, a leading provider of Aggregation, Interworking and Migration solutions, today announced a comprehensive wireless backhaul solution enabling wireless carriers to offer new data services based on EV-DO (Evolution Data Only), Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) and WiMAX services while reducing operational and capital expenditures. By using Pseudowire and network interworking capabilities, wireless service providers can build a state-of-the-art backhaul network capable of supporting a consistent and deterministic IP/MPLS packet switched core network.
This packet-enabled solution from Fujitsu enables service providers to seamlessly interconnect their existing ATM backbone network with new Ethernet backhaul networks and a converged IP/MPLS core preserving their existing customers as well as their legacy assets.
“No other provider is as well-positioned as Fujitsu to support and deploy scalable solutions enabling the profitable deployment of wireless data networks,” said Rodney Boehm, senior vice president of Data and Customer Solutions group for Fujitsu. “The capacity and scale of the widely-deployed FLASHWAVE® 4500 Multi-Service Provisioning Platform (MSPP) coupled with the interworking and Pseudowire-aggregation capabilities of the HSX 6000 shelf positions wireless carriers to confidently deploy EV-DO and 3G/UMTS services in a cost-effective package.”
“The Hammerhead HSX 6000™ allows wireless service providers to reduce their operational expenditures while maximizing their existing infrastructure investments,” said Pete Savage, CEO of Hammerhead Systems. “With this approach, wireless service providers can continue to support their existing customer base, provide new revenue streams and services with application awareness such as Voice over IP (VoIP), real-time video connectivity, and online gaming, while converging on an IP/MPLS packet switched network.”
Fujitsu’s packet-enabled transport solution leverages Hammerhead’s HSX 6000 Layer 2.5 aggregation switch and the latest innovations in Pseudowire and Dry Martini technologies. The HSX 6000 has the industry’s lowest Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for edge aggregation and can optimize its aggregation and grooming efficiency due to bandwidth pooling capabilities and service agile ports.
Pseudowires provide the ability to emulate the full breadth of Data-Link and Transport Layer services across any core network and serve as the fundamental underpinnings of an effective transition of new and existing services over a converged core. Hammerhead’s HSX 6000 was architected with application awareness and a rich set of Pseudowire aggregation, grooming and operational features and the company is actively involved in driving the Pseudowire Edge-to-Edge Emulation (PWE3) Dry Martini technical drafts through the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). This technical achievement will extend the reach of Pseudowires beyond MPLS to work across any infrastructure, including the installed base of SONET and ATM equipment.
The solution also utilizes the FLASHWAVE 4500 multiservice, optical transport platform, which supports the optimization of traditional and next-generation services over a broad range of metropolitan transport networks. By deploying the FLASHWAVE 4500 platform with its advanced data switching and grooming functionality, connections to digital cross connect or Ethernet devices can be optimized or eliminated to simplify networks. Next-generation functionality combines multiple Network Elements into a compact, telco-standard shelf, enabling carriers to realize immediate CAPEX and OPEX savings, while expanding service offering capabilities.
