Centennial de Puerto Rico Deploys NETSMART® 1500 EMS for Management of their Fujitsu Metro Network

Richardson, Texas, January 4, 2005 — Fujitsu Network Communications Inc., a leading supplier of IT and networking solutions, today announced that Centennial de Puerto Rico, one of the largest telecommunications providers in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, has completed installation of the Fujitsu NETSMART® 1500 Element Management System (EMS). Centennial, a wholly owned subsidiary of Centennial Communications Corp. (Nasdaq:CYCL), is using this sophisticated software solution to cut response time by eliminating the need to dispatch technicians to remote sites, as well as manage, provision and monitor hundreds of Fujitsu network elements deployed in access and backbone networks across Puerto Rico.

The NETSMART 1500 EMS includes a full suite of network and element management features that support quick and efficient provisioning of Ethernet, WDM, ATM and SONET services. Designed to be robust and scalable, the NETSMART 1500 software seamlessly integrates into existing operational support infrastructures and allows carriers to manage up to 8,000 SONET or WDM network elements from a single server. Recent enhancements include a new connection manager that uses advanced algorithms to identify unused network bandwidth, determine optimal circuit paths, preview proposed routes to allow circuit parameter changes and path adjustments, and implement connections.

“Centennial selected the NETSMART 1500 EMS to realize Operational Expense (OPEX) savings for managing, provisioning and monitoring our embedded base of Fujitsu network elements,” said Ignacio Angulo, senior vice president of wireless engineering at Centennial de Puerto Rico. “The system’s unparalleled scalability allows us to start with a configuration that is cost-effective for our network today and grow over time to support our long-term element management needs. In addition, the system allows us to take advantage of a number of powerful security and network survivability features that allow us to deliver more value to our customers.”

Centennial is deploying the FLASHWAVE® 4100 Multi Service Provisioning Platform (MSPP) in their access network to deliver traditional TDM and next-generation services such as Ethernet to their customers. FLASHWAVE 4300 MSPPs in their central offices provide the robust switching capabilities needed to groom and aggregate circuits from their access rings to optimize traffic before it enters the metro network. The company also utilizes FLASHWAVE 4500 MSPPs in the core of their metro network to create highly survivable interoffice rings. While these rings are predominantly at the OC-48 rate today, the FLASHWAVE 4500 platform supports their goal of a cost-effective migration to the OC-192 rate to support enhanced and higher bandwidth service offerings in the future.

“Centennial has been an excellent Fujitsu customer for nearly two decades, with deployment that began with our asynchronous products in the 1980s and continued with our ground-breaking FLM SONET nodes in the 1990s,” said Bill Erickson, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Fujitsu Network Communications. “Their decision to expand their network with our FLASHWAVE 4000 MSPPs and NETSMART 1500 EMS reflects their confidence in our overall portfolio and its ability to help leading edge carriers such as Centennial deliver exciting new services to its subscribers while keeping cost and complexity in check.”
