Fujitsu Principal Network Architect on Panel Debating “WiMAX vs. 3G vs. Wi-Fi” at WiMAX World 2004

Richardson, TX, October 28, 2004 — WHAT:
Jim Orr, principal network architect in the wireless market development group at Fujitsu, will debate “WiMAX vs. 3G vs. Wi-Fi” as part of a panel discussion during the 2004 WiMAX World Conference & Exposition. Fujitsu is also a platinum sponsor of the conference and will discuss its plans for entry into the wireless networking market. For more information about the conference, please visithttp://www.wimaxworld.com.

Until recently, many believed the new IEEE 802.16 standard and established 3G cellular standards, such as Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) and EVolution, Data-Only (EV DO), could co-exist with little competition. However, the introduction of mobility into the WiMAX roadmap, as well as the slow and expensive roll-out of 3G services in many areas of the world, have made WiMAX a direct competitor to 3G. Additionally, many operators have made significant investments in Wi Fi equipment, which is likely to play an integral part in many wireless broadband deployments.

Although WiMAX and 3G have different strengths and weaknesses, economics and politics suggest they could conflict. Mobile WiMAX will enable wireline and second tier operators without 3G licenses to challenge the larger Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPs) and disrupt their ability to earn a reasonable return on their investment. There will also be opportunities for WISPs to use WiMAX services to complement 3G services in developing nations and create premium data networks.

This panel will debate the complementary and competitive nature of 3G, WiMAX and Wi Fi, discuss the business models that support each technology and suggest the best choice for wireless service providers.
