Fujitsu FLASHWAVE® 4020 Access Platform Selected by Cox Communications for Nationwide Deployment

Low cost, easy to deploy device joins Cox portfolio of business service delivery platforms to simplify ethernet deployment within all regions

Richardson, TX, July 27, 2004 — Fujitsu Network Communications Inc., a leading supplier of IT and networking solutions, today announced that Cox Communications, a multi-service broadband communications company with approximately 6.7 million total customers, has added the FLASHWAVE® 4020 Ethernet Service Platform (ESP) to its portfolio of approved business service delivery platforms.  Cox will use the device to extend the proven reliability of SONET to the edge of their metro networks and simultaneously deliver low cost DS1 and Ethernet services to customer premises within all their U.S. markets.  Cox chose the FLASHWAVE 4020 ESP because it is simple to deploy, and achieves a quick return on investment (ROI) with dramatically low operational costs. Deployment of this field-proven platform will also provide full interoperability with Cox’s extensive installed base of Fujitsu optical transport products.

“Cox is aggressively seeking new ways to deliver the triple play services of voice, video and data across all of our markets in the most cost effective means possible,” said Dan Estes, manager of Transport Engineering at Cox Communications.  “The FLASHWAVE 4020 ESP gives us the ability to immediately offer our customers Ethernet circuits for new services such as Ethernet Private Line and Virtual Private Networks, while also supporting multiple DS1 connections for voice services.”

The FLASHWAVE 4020 ESP is a compact optical access module that cost-effectively supports up to seven DS1 and four 10/100Base-T Ethernet services simultaneously over protected or unprotected OC?3 or OC?12 network interfaces.  The dual optical interfaces allow the FLASHWAVE 4020 ESP to support Unidirectional Path Switched Ring (UPSR) or 1+1 Automatic Protection Switching (APS) configurations with sub-50 ms SONET protection switching, as well as unprotected network applications.  As a single self-contained unit without plug-in modules, the device reduces equipment and operational costs, and simplifies planning, training, installation, ordering and troubleshooting.

Advanced Ethernet over SONET (EoS) capabilities inherent in the FLASHWAVE 4020 ESP, including support for high- and low-order Virtual Concatenation (VCAT) and Link Capacity Adjustment Scheme (LCAS), provide a simple, yet highly efficient way to transport Ethernet services across Cox metro regions.  Cox will install FLASHWAVE 4020 nodes at customer premises and use EoS functionality to map Ethernet circuits into SONET to maintain full compatibility with their vast embedded SONET network.  By leveraging their existing SONET infrastructure instead of deploying a separate overlay network, Cox will eliminate incremental operational expenses while supporting immediate service availability across their entire footprint.

“The FLASHWAVE 4020 ESP is an ideal service delivery platform for the comprehensive business access applications that Cox offers its customers because of its small space, power and cost requirements, plus its ability to reliably deliver simultaneous Ethernet and DS1 services to customer premises,” said Doug Saylor, senior vice president of marketing for Fujitsu Network Communications.  “Cox is a leading provider of all three major services types and the FLASHWAVE 4020 ESP will help them remain highly responsive to their customer’s demand for innovative, next-generation services.”
