Fujitsu and Tellabs Successfully Demonstrate Enhanced Service Activation using the OIF UNI 1.0 Specification
Richardson, TX, November 3, 2003 — Fujitsu Network Communications Inc. and Tellabs today announce they have successfully demonstrated rapid DS3 and Fast Ethernet service activation using the User-Network Interface (UNI), as defined by the Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) UNI 1.0 specification. The purpose of the UNI 1.0 specification is to enhance carriers’ ability to provision new services and reduce operational costs by distributing network control across direct signaling interfaces. Fujitsu used its next-generation FLASHWAVE® 4300 Multiservice Provisioning Platform (MSPP) to demonstrate UNI 1.0 interoperability with the Tellabs® 6500 transport switch and the Tellabs 5500 NGX-S transport switch. This demonstration also established that Generalized Multi-Protocol Label Switching (GMPLS) signaling offers carriers the best protocols for improving service provisioning.

demonstration is different because we have shown how the control plane can interact with the data plane, demonstrating actual
service setup and teardown using the OIF’s UNI 1.0 specification. Service providers can use these advanced capabilities to
simplify service provisioning and create immediate circuit connections through any OIF UNI 1.0-compliant core optical transport
network.”

Demonstration Details
In the Fujitsu and Tellabs demonstration, Tellabs used its virtual network element (NE) technology to build a core mesh. In
the core, the Tellabs 6500 transport switch provided connection points between two Fujitsu FLASHWAVE 4300 NEs and the Tellabs
5500 NGX-S transport switch NE by using protected and unprotected OC-3 and OC-12 interfaces. Streaming video stream servers
and client PCs were connected to DS3 and Fast Ethernet interfaces on the FLASHWAVE 4300 systems and DS3 interfaces on the
Tellabs 5500 NGX-S system. Successful control and data plane interaction was demonstrated when video signals were passed between
UNI clients activating DS3 and Fast Ethernet services over the control plane. Bandwidth that was appropriate to the services
was signaled over the UNIs presented by the FLASHWAVE 4300s and Tellabs 5500 NGX-S system, and connections were automatically
established through the core Tellabs transport switches. Services were similarly torn down by control plane signals. The demonstration
proved successful implementation of UNI-C on the FLASHWAVE 4300 optical transport platform and the Tellabs 5500 NGX-S transport
switch, and UNI-N on the Tellabs 6500 transport switch. Next steps for control plane integration include the completion of
support for management systems so they can effectively interwork with control plane-enabled network elements.
