Fujitsu Issues the Second White Paper on WiMAX: “RF Spectrum Utilization in WiMAX”

Reviews Band Diversification, Regional Variations, Transmit/Receive Requirements

Cambridge, UK, November 15, 2004 — Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc. (FMA) has issued a new White Paper, “RF Spectrum Utilization in WiMAX,” focusing on the WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) standard and its implementation. Fujitsu’s first White Paper, “WiMAX Technology and Deployment for Last-Mile Wireless Broadband and Backhaul Applications,” was published in August 24, 2004.

The new White Paper discusses the frequency spectrum requirements for implementation of the IEEE 802.16REVd (WiMAX) broadband wireless standard. The document also reviews the diversity of band spectrum for WiMAX-certified Metro Area Network (MAN) deployment, which is creating new demand for base stations and subscriber stations with varying RF requirements.

Additionally, the paper explores the growth prospects for the emerging Wireless MAN™ market based on the WiMAX (IEEE 802.16x) standard, and focuses on the control signals required for transmit and receive functions. A detailed section reviews IEEE 802.16REVd, the version of the specification that addresses the point-multipoint architecture designed for last-mile applications. Brief sections on the RF-to-SoC interface and future expansion of the WiMAX spectrum also are included.

Fujitsu’s WiMAX Chip Scheduled in 2005
FMA is working closely with equipment and infrastructure vendors on a single-chip solution that integrates PHY (physical layer) and MAC (media access control) functions. The chip is targeted for use in base station and subscriber station applications, with a launch date currently set for the second calendar quarter of 2005

As a founding and board member of the WiMAX Forum, FMA supports the standards development and compliance programs that are essential to successful deployment, according to Keith Horn, senior vice president of marketing and sales for Fujitsu Microelectronics America. “Fujitsu is on schedule to deliver a performance-driven WiMAX solution in 2005 that is based on the company’s experience and expertise in networking and communications technology,” Horn said. “We will offer flexible chipsets and reference designs for WiMAX-certifiable systems to equipment vendors.”
