New Ultra-Small Dual PLL Frequency Synthesizer from Fujitsu Microelectronics Features Very Low Power, Low Current, for Mobile Wireless Communications Products

Volume reduction enables significant miniaturization with excellent system performance

Sunnyvale, CA, August 5, 2003 — A new series of ultra-small Dual PLL frequency synthesizers, featuring power supply current as low as 2.5 milliamps (mA) at 2.7V, is available now from Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc. (FMA).

Fujitsu’s new MB15F7xUV series, developed by Fujitsu Limited and Fujitsu VLSI Limited in Japan, provides the low noise and rapid hopping intervals required by the new generation of wireless communications systems such as CDMA, Wireless LAN and Fixed Wireless Access. Each member of the series can operate with a very low 2.4V supply voltage and offers selectable charge pump currents – either ± 1.5mA or ± 6mA. A high-sensitivity on-chip prescaler can accept a minimum of -15dBm input signal level at 50 ohm termination.

The UV series devices have only two power supply pins – VRF and VIF – compared with four pins in other PLL frequency synthesizers, thus reducing the number of external parts required. The serial data format of the new series is compatible with Fujitsu’s previously introduced MB15F7xUL PLL frequency synthesizer series.

The new series includes four dual PLL synthesizers operating at frequencies between 0.35 GHz and 6 GHz, packaged in 18-pin bump chip carrier (BCC18) packages that measure only 2.4mm x 2.7mm x 0.45mm. “These new PLL frequency synthesizers are the industry’s smallest,᾿ said Keith Horn, vice president of marketing for Fujitsu Microelectronics America. “They deliver the low current consumption, low voltage and low noise required by advanced generations of mobile communications systems, while enabling a 40 percent reduction in space over competitive products.᾿

Pricing and Availability
The members of the new dual PLL synthesizer series include the MB15F72UV (with operating frequencies of 0.35GHz/1.3GHz and 2.5mA current consumption), the MB15F73UV (0.6GHz/2.25GHz, 3.2mA), the MB15F74UV (2GHz/4GHz, 9mA), and the MB15F76UV (1.5GHz/6GHz, 8.5 mA). Pricing starts at $1.00 each in 10,000-unit quantities.
