New RISC-based Microcontrollers from Fujitsu Microelectronics America Designed for Digital Home, Vehicle A/V Appliance Control
Detroit, MI, October 21, 2002 — Two new 32-bit RISC microcontrollers introduced today at the Convergence 2002 show in Detroit by Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc. (FMA) are designed to operate audio equipment, digital TVs, DVD players, and other digital home and automotive entertainment products. The new MCUs are the latest additions to Fujitsu's rapidly growing 32-bit FR microcontroller family.
The new devices - Fujitsu's MB91F353 and MB91F355 - operate at up to 50 MHz, providing a major advance in MCU performance serving the new generation of consumer electronics products. The 50 MHz operating frequency enables performance up to 64 MIPs, almost 20 times the speed of existing 16-bit CISC-based MCUs.
To control the systems that handle audio and video processing, both the MB91F353 and MB91F355 incorporate a high-performance serial interface, along with a built-in 32 KHz clock and clock gearing that enable a wide range of power-management functions and low power consumption. The MCUs also carry four Megabits of flash memory and 192 Kbit RAM, allowing storage of the larger and more complex A/V control programs now required on consumer systems. Each MCU also has an 8/10-bit analog-to-digital converter and an 8-bit digital-to-analog converter.
Additionally, to simplify AV processing system control, the MB91F355 includes a serial interface with nine full channels, the only device of its kind with that many channels.
"New consumer electronics products now include functions to handle support for Internet connectivity and JPEG image processing, among other capabilities," said Keith Horn, vice president of marketing at FMA. "The microcontrollers that drive these products need to store and execute more complex programs, and they require high-performance serial interfaces to control video and audio processing. These two new RISC-based controllers deliver the requirements for the new generation of consumer appliances."
Pricing and Availability
The new MB91F353 is available in a plastic 176-pin low-profile quad flat package; the MB91F355 comes in a 120-pin LQFP.
Pricing starts at $15.62 each in 10,000-piece units.
Fujitsu continues to enhance its microcontroller families, and will use the ongoing development of memory technologies and packaging line-ups with built-in Flash memory to strengthen its MCU products, reducing total parts count and surface area to serve emerging market requirements.
