Fujitsu Adds Two New High-Performance Mobile FCRAM Devices to its Growing PSRAM Product Range
Tokyo, Japan and San Jose, CA, September 17, 2002 — Fujitsu Limited and Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc. (FMA) today introduced the company's latest Application Specific Memories (ASMs), a family of low-power Mobile Fast Cycle RAMs (FCRAM™) based on Fujitsu's FCRAM architecture.
The two FCRAM devices are designed for use in next-generation mobile phones that offer capabilities such as Internet access, music distribution, e-mail, video postcards, information and location-based services. The new ASMs satisfy the expanded memory requirements of the advanced infrastructure and high data rates demanded by these latest mobile cellular technologies.
The new Mobile FCRAMs adopt Page Mode operation, which dramatically improves performance when consecutive address access occurs within the same page. The devices also integrate additional new features suited to each target market.
The first device in the family, the MB82DPS02183B, a 32Mbit Mobile FCRAM, operates from a 1.8V power supply. This is in line with today's GSM/GPRS mobile communications standards, where migration from a 3V to 1.8V power supply is ahead of other cellular phone standards.
The second device, the MB82DP02322A, is a 64Mbit Mobile FCRAM that integrates a x32-bit I/O to provide the enhanced performance required for the multimedia processing facilities of feature-rich cellular phone standards like W-CDMA and UMTS.
"We believe that FCRAM technology has made a significant design contribution toward meeting the demand for high-density RAM, and has established Pseudo SRAM as a new alternative to low-power SRAM in cellular phone applications," said Masao Taguchi, general manager of the System Memory Division of Fujitsu Limited.
"Until now, Fujitsu has been supporting Mobile FCRAM products, together with Flash memory, in MCP packaging," said Keith Horn, FMA's vice president of marketing. "We are now able to expand our support for Mobile FCRAM to the wafer business in addition to the traditional MCP business.
"Mobile FCRAM has established a strong position in the cellular phone market, and the new Mobile FCRAMs will further reinforce our market position in GPRS, EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution) and W-CDMA. Future versions will expand our base of applications even further," Horn added.
Pricing and Availability
Samples of the MB82DPS02183B and MB82DP02322A series will be available this October with prices beginning at $8 (MB82DPS02183B)
and $12 (MB82DP02322A) each per unit. Fujitsu is committed to the continued development and production of high value-added
Application Specific Memory products, based on customer needs in diverse market segments.
