Fujitsu Microelectronics America Extends Auto Graphics Display Controller Series with New MB86292 Orchid Version

Supplies 32MB external memory port for storage-intensive vehicle graphics display applications

San Jose, CA, June 4, 2002 — Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc. (FMA) today introduced its new MB86292 "Orchid," the latest member of the company's growing series of two- and three-dimensional automotive graphic display controllers. Orchid is the latest in a family of state-of-the-art controllers optimized for vehicle navigation, mobile information terminals and other embedded applications. The company introduced its MB86290A Cremson and MB86291 Scarlet versions last December.

The MB86292 Orchid provides all the basic capabilities included in the Scarlet version, and adds a memory interface that can link up to 32 MB of SDRAM or Fast Cycle RAM (FCRAM™) to meet memory-intensive requirements. The device provides four layers of overlay display, digital video input, video scalar, an I2C interface and a geometry processor. Its external video input can capture video signals according to the standard RBT-ITU656 YUV4:2:2 format.

Orchid supports alpha blending, anti-aliasing, chroma-keying and picture-in-picture functions for video image display, using a dedicated W-layer. The integrated, flexible video scalar enables the adjustment of video input format dimensions.

Orchid can perform numeric calculations for graphical operations via its geometry processor, which supports Affin-conversions, model-view-projections and 3D-clipping operations, among others. RGB digital outputs are included for display connections. All drawing functions, display-list formats and software functions are binary-compatible with the Scarlet and Cremson versions. Using a configurable CPU interface, Orchid can be linked to microcontrollers such as Fujitsu's FR30, Hitachi's SH3 and SH4, and NEC's V83x.

"Fujitsu has applied its extensive expertise in graphics and multimedia processing design to create a powerful and flexible series of two- and three-dimensional automotive graphics display controllers to serve all sectors of the vehicle market," said Dan Landeck, FMA's product marketing manager. "We continue to expand this series, providing all the critical functions and options automakers need for their long-term design cycles. While these advanced displays are being adopted first by the high end of the auto market, we expect them to move into all models and styles as the technology proves itself and graphics display becomes a differentiating feature for manufacturers."

Like all members of Fujitsu's auto graphics display controller series, the MB86292 is fabricated using the company's 0.25-micron CMOS technology. The new controller, which runs on 3.3V I/O and 2.5V internal supply voltages, is packaged in a 256-pin quad flat pack. Prices start at $24 each in 10,000-piece quantities. The MB86292-EB development system, which consists of a PCI adapter card for functional evaluation and software development, also is available now.
