Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc. Announces the MBF200 Fingerprint Sensor with Integrated, Full-speed USB Interface

Enables low-cost, biometrically secure physical-access systems and secure mobile-computing environments

San Jose, CA, November 6, 2001 — A new solid-state fingerprint sensor targeted at secure mobile-computing systems and physical-access authentication systems is now available from Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc. (FMA). The MBF200, which features an integrated USB V1.1 interface, is the second product from FMA's new Biometric Sensor Product Group.

The new solid-state fingerprint sensor features a 256 x 300 pixel sensor array that produces clear 500 DPI resolution fingerprint images. The sensor area, which is approximately 1.28cm x 1.5cm, allows single-touch fingerprint authentication for all users. The sensor also features an ultra-hard, patented, scratchproof protective coating, and an integrated two-stage 8-bit A/D converter. The sensor offers the user the choice of three interfaces: an 8-bit microprocessor bus, an integrated Serial Peripheral Interface, and an integrated full speed USB interface.

The sensor's operating voltage ranges from 3.3V to 5.0V, and the product features very low operating and standby power consumption of 100mW and 165uW, respectively. The sensor also includes an Automatic Finger Detect (AFD) circuit that will generate and send a finger-detect interrupt to the host CPU when a finger is placed on the sensor. This feature reduces CPU overhead associated with continually polling the sensor for the presence of a fingerprint. The MBF200 is pin-to-pin compatible with the Veridicom FPS200 fingerprint sensor.

The MBF200 fingerprint sensor will be offered in an 80-pin LQFP package that features a very thin 1.4mm profile suitable for integration into laptop computers and other mobile PDA devices.

"We are pleased to announce the second addition to our biometric sensor product family," said Douglas McArthur, director of FMA's Biometric Sensor Product Group. "With its integrated USB interface, the MBF200 sensor enables the construction of very cost-effective USB peripherals, and its serial and MCU interfaces enable easy integration into embedded secure-access applications."

Pricing for the MBF200 sensor begins at under $60 each for sample quantities and $40 each in quantities of 1,000.
