Agere Systems selects Fujitsu's Fast Cycle RAM for OC-192 PayloadPlus™ network processor architecture

FCRAM™ provides required low latency, high bandwidth, fast random cycle times for high-speed networks

Allentown, PA and San Jose, CA, October 22, 2001 — Agere Systems (NYSE: AGR.A), the world leader in communications components, today announced it has chosen Fujitsu's 256-megabit fast cycle random access memory (FCRAM™) for use in its 10-gigabit-per-second (Gbit/s) wire-speed, carrier-class programmable PayloadPlus™ network processing architecture. The FCRAM technology will enable Agere's PayloadPlus family of network processing solutions to deliver the higher bandwidth, performance and speeds necessary for next-generation deep packet processing networks, at lower cost and using less space.

“The PayloadPlus architecture was designed to perform deep packet processing without the need for power-hungry and expensive content addressable memories (CAM) or large external static random access memory (SRAM) as used in competitive products,᾿ said Ford Tamer, vice president of the processing, aggregation and switching group at Agere Systems. “Fujitsu's high-density FCRAM technology combined with the PayloadPlus architecture will help deliver on the promise of more bandwidth and higher performance in high-capacity line cards, multi-terabit switches, routers and similar products.᾿ The PayloadPlus solution requires only FCRAM and a small amount of SRAM.

Network FCRAMs are designed for high-performance networks and communications systems running at speeds of 200 megahertz and which require low latencies and fast random cycle times for operations such as wire-speed buffers, look-up tables and queues.

“Fujitsu is providing the advanced memory technology required by one of the leaders in the OC-192 network processor market, and we are very pleased to be working with them,᾿ said Keith Horn, vice president of marketing for Fujitsu Microelectronics America. “The network FCRAM has been designed to support the difficult block move, latency, and random cycle demands generated by the wire-speed buffering and table processing found in OC-192 line card applications.᾿
