Fujitsu Microelectronics Introduces New SAW Filters in Ultra-Small Packages; Four New Single-Ended Devices Targeted Toward Wideband CDMA Market
New series is based on lithium tantalate, available in small surface mount packages
San Jose, CA, January 30, 2001 — Fujitsu Microelectronics, Inc. (FMI), the world leader in Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) filter technology, today introduced its new family of highly stable, high-performance SAW filters in ultra-small packages for Wideband CDMA applications.
The new SAW filters are members of the F6 Series, which is designed for high-frequency 1.95 GHz and 2.14 GHz wideband applications. Based on lithium tantalate (LiTaO3), the SAW filter family uses a "ladder" design, which combines serial and parallel on-chip resonators to provide an insertion loss of less than 3.5dB, along with high stop-band attenuation. The SAWs support low inductance and high resistance to shock, mechanical vibration and climate changes. Impedance is just 50 Ohms, so designers do not need to include external matching circuits.
The new SAWs come in 3 x 3 millimeter and 2.5 x 2.0 millimeter surface mount packages that measure less than one millimeter in height. They have one input and one output pin, and the balanced Rx filter has just one input pin and two balanced output pins, allowing the filter to be connected directly to a mixer input.
"Small, efficient SAW filters provide a key benefit to advanced cellular technology design and to other communications applications," said Fumio Baba, FMI's vice president of the System Devices Group. "This new series is designed specifically to reduce insertion loss, an important requirement in the emerging class of Wideband CDMA applications, such as upcoming video phone and high-speed data-transmission systems."
The four new SAWs are available in various package sizes that meet specific size and compatibility restrictions. The F6CE-1G9500-L2ZP transmitter and F6CE-2G1400-L2ZQ receiver are housed in 3mm x 3mm packages, and the F6CP-1G9500-L21P transmitter and the F6CP-2G1400-L21Q receiver are housed in 2.5mm x 2mm packages. All are packaged in surface-mount leadless chip carrier (LCC) packages that use the industry's latest flip-chip technology. Pricing begins at $1.80 each in 10,000-unit quantities.
