Fujitsu Announces Support for Semantic Web
Sunnyvale, CA, March 25, 2004 — Fujitsu Laboratories of America, a leading research division of Fujitsu Limited, today announced their support of the newly released Web Ontology Language (OWL) by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Along with many other software companies and universities throughout the world, researchers at Fujitsu have helped to contribute towards and shape the development of the OWL standard. The company believes that semantic-oriented standards and technologies such as Resource Description Framework (RDF) and OWL represent a significant step forwards in advancing the automated understanding of data by computer systems and will also significantly benefit businesses in key areas, such as enterprise integration.
Fujitsu has been using Semantic Web technologies in its research activities for the past 2 years and is a leader in developing research and prototypes in advanced and emerging markets. "Technologies like OWL have been critical in the development of some of our internal products and applications, as well as with collaborative projects, such as Agentcities," said Dr Jonathan Dale, a researcher at Fujitsu Laboratories of America who has been part of the OWL standardization process. "Being able to represent domain knowledge with machine-understandable semantics, rather than just syntax, represents an important advance in delivering automation for businesses."
Also, Fujitsu Enabling Software Technology GmbH (Fujitsu EST) headquartered in Munich, Germany, part of the Fujitsu Software Group, is convinced that the new standards of RDF and OWL will accelerate the availability of products to support the Semantic Web. ?With the Interstage product family, especially with the product Interstage Content Integrator, Fujitsu offers technology to integrate and deliver any kind of content to users and applications. Support for the new standards will improve the ability to semantically 'understand' the content and consequently deliver higher value to the users," says Dr. Guenter Merbeth, CEO of Fujitsu EST.

About the World Wide Web Consortium
The W3C was created to lead the Web to its full potential by developing common protocols that promote its evolution and ensure
its interoperability. It is an international industry consortium jointly run by MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence
Laboratory (MIT CSAIL) in the USA, the European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics (ERCIM) headquartered
in France and Keio University in Japan. Services provided by the Consortium include: a repository of information about the
World Wide Web for developers and users, and various prototype and sample applications to demonstrate use of new technology.
To date, nearly 400 organizations are Members of the Consortium.
