Fujitsu, LSI Logic, Supermicro and Bell Microproducts Deliver First Serial Attached SCSI Solution
System Integrators and Resellers Gain Access to SAS Server Product Ahead of OEM Platforms
San Jose, CA, June 22, 2005 — Bell Microproducts (NASDAQ: BELM), a leading value-added provider of storage products and solutions, today announced that it will deliver small form factor (SFF) serial connectivity to early system integrator and reseller adopters in partnership with Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc., LSI Logic (NYSE: LSI) and Supermicro Computer. Featuring Fujitsu SFF Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) hard disk drives and the LSI Logic SAS3442X host bus adapter (HBA), the 8-drive bay Supermicro canister is designed to fit into existing enterprise enclosures. Users can now leverage the proven SCSI technologies customers expect in data center environments with increased device support and bandwidth scalability, while reducing the overhead impact that challenges today's SCSI environments.
"Today, the promise of Serial Attached SCSI becomes marketplace reality," said Mike Chenery, vice president, advanced product engineering, Fujitsu Computer Products of America. "Fujitsu and LSI Logic have consistently led the industry in SAS product innovations and developmental testing. Now, with the cooperation of Supermicro and Bell Microproducts, we have delivered a pre-tested small form factor SAS solution with proven reliability."
The SAS product bundle has not only been certified by both the Fujitsu Firmware and Compatibility Testing (FACT) lab and the Bell Microproducts testing facility, but it has also passed Supermicro’s rigorous system validation which includes thermal, vibration, and stress testing to ensure the ultimate in system stability. The 2.5" SFF SAS solution enables customers to increase hard disk drive density within the same server footprint, but with less cabling, smaller connection points, and while reducing heat and power requirements for blade servers, workstations, and enterprise data center environments.
"This announcement represents an important milestone for the storage community. Fujitsu, LSI, Supermicro and Bell Micro have taken steps to deliver a market ready SAS solution ahead of the OEM community," said Dave Reinsel, director of storage research, IDC. "We believe the transition from SCSI to SAS hard disk drives is a logical step for the industry as it seeks to enable higher performance, improved reliability and increased scalability to both the enterprise and SMB segments. Channel customers are in a prime position to be early adopters and to leverage the advantages of SFF SAS technology."
"We are proud to cooperate with Fujitsu, LSI and Bell Microproducts as pioneers in bringing these first SAS solutions to market," said Alex Hsu, senior vice president of sales, Supermicro. "Now, our customers can be the first to benefit from the advantages of SAS technology."
The four companies conducted customer and sales product training in San Jose, Calif. complete with live product demonstrations in anticipation of the marketplace demand.
SAS interface offers both SCSI and Serial ATA connectivity
SAS technology enables SCSI interface solutions beyond Ultra320 to the next-generation Direct Attach Storage (DAS) enterprise server and high-performance workstation markets, while retaining device-level backward compatibility. The SAS standard defines a device-level enterprise storage interface incorporating SCSI command sets, serial point-to-point interconnections, dual porting, increased addressability and the ability to scale to small form factors. As the SAS physical layer is compatible with Serial ATA (SATA), users have the choice of populating their systems with SAS or SATA hard disk drives, or a combination of both.
