Fujitsu Document Imaging System Enhances Business Process Management Solution for Healthcare Providers

DST Technologies Utilizes Fujitsu Scanners to Foster Patient Satisfaction and Reduce Operational Costs at Sisters of Mercy Health System

San Jose, CA, July 27, 2004 — Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc. (FCPA), a market leader in document imaging scanners and services, today announced that its award winning scanners continue to gain rapid momentum and win market share within the healthcare industry, a market notoriously plagued by volumes of paper, including medical records, patient files, and insurance forms.

Today's healthcare providers face increased pressures to boost the efficiency of admissions, registration, billing, and records archiving to maximize the overall patient experience. These pressures are also coupled with increased levels of scrutiny due to regulatory compliance issues such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Consequently, it is critical that healthcare providers create a "best practices" approach to manage business content.

Sisters of Mercy Health System (Mercy), a St. Louis-based healthcare provider, is a large network of hospitals, physician practices, health plans, and health and human services that encountered these issues while recognizing the need to differentiate itself from competition.  Mercy sought to ensure a positive and convenient patient experience by streamlining its paper laden document management process through digitizing patient records, and updating an antiquated archiving system.

Mercy selected Automated Work Distributor™ (AWD®), an award-winning business process management solution provided by DST Technologies, Inc. (DST), to reduce the manual, redundant tasks involved in processing business information, and expedite accurate and timely claims for maximum reimbursement. The DST solution was further enhanced with the introduction of Fujitsu scanners as the document imaging solution for Mercy's patient access departments. Fujitsu's technology helped bridge Mercy's paper and digital environments, resulting in increased patient satisfaction and reduced operational costs.

"DST prides itself on providing best-of-breed solutions to our customers," said Tim O'Brien, vice president of AWD sales at DST Technologies, Inc.  "By definition, best-of-breed requires that each enabling component of the solution meets the highest performance and quality standards.  It is for this reason that DST selected the Fujitsu fi-4120C scanner as the document scanning platform for Mercy's patient access departments."

The Fujitsu scanning solutions served as a paper-to-digital catalyst in Mercy's implementation of AWD, capturing high quality and accurate digitized images of original documents and patient information.  The AWD solution provides Mercy with:

  • Faster payment turnaround
  • On-demand access to data
  • Improved utilization of resources
  • Ability to e-mail, print and fax images directly from a workstation
  • Quality assurance capabilities
  • Report writing capabilities for increased employee productivity

"We were looking for a system that would provide us with immediate and easy access to our vital business documents," said Fred Ford, vice president of revenue and decision support at Sisters of Mercy Health System. "The Automated Work Distributor has reduced our time-consuming paper shuffling among our numerous departments and business offices and at the same improved our revenue cycle from start to finish."

"Fujitsu is pleased to be selected by DST as a key component of the Sisters of Mercy solution," said Don McMahan, vice president of sales, Imaging Products Group, FCPA. "In the end, satisfied customers drive business, whether that customer is a patient, healthcare provider, or solutions provider. As document imaging needs continue to evolve, especially in light of recently imposed security and privacy regulations such as HIPAA, Fujitsu will continue to innovate and establish relationships with solutions providers and partners in order to meet these needs."

In addition to DST Technologies, Inc., Fujitsu's entire line of enterprise scanners is available through authorized resellers, VARs, and distributors including Compucenter de Mexico, Cranel Imaging, Ingram Micro Inc., NewWave Technologies, Optical Laser, and Tech Data
