Fujitsu Honors Kofax for Innovative Implementation of Information Capture Technology

Kofax Recognized for Exceptional Document Management Solution Design and Implementation for the New Mexico Department of Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources

San Jose, CA, May 3, 2004 — Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc. (FCPA), a market leader in document imaging scanners and services, today announced that Kofax was the recipient of the company's Innovative Leadership Award for its outstanding work employing a solution to renovate document management practices at the New Mexico Department of Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources. Fujitsu grants the Innovative Leadership Award to Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) to recognize exceptional contributions to the field of content management. Winners are selected on their ability to successfully streamline business processes and positively impact their customers' bottom lines.

"At Fujitsu, we have long recognized the enormous capabilities and benefits that can be achieved through partnership with Kofax" said Tom Loeffler, director of business development, Imaging Products Group, Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc. "VRS technology is the benchmark for document image quality in all types of scanning environments. We are pleased to have the opportunity to recognize Kofax with this award as it reinforces the strength and validity of our longstanding partnership."

"We are honored to receive this award because it reinforces our continued success and evolution in the field of document management and information capture," said Rick Murphy, president and CEO at Kofax. "Our alliance with Fujitsu underscores our philosophy of providing the best information capture solutions to our customers and the channel."

The New Mexico Department of Energy is tasked with managing the state's extensive oil wells -- a task that produces a sea of paperwork totaling more than five million documents. Recognizing the need to modernize, the state allocated $1 million dollars for a program that would accurately archive information on its 90,000 oil wells.  KTech, a Kofax Certified Solutions Provider (CSP), designed and customized a complete information capture solution using Fujitsu fi-4750C scanners equipped with VirtualReScan® (VRS) software as well as Kofax's Ascent Capture® application. In a year and a half, all five million documents were scanned and uploaded to a central database and are now generally available to the public through the division's web-site or through computers in each district office. Although the daily scanning of documents fluctuates, they expect staff members will capture and scan approximately 166,000 pages of documents, charts, photographs and legal transcripts this year.

"The Kofax solution significantly improved the division's ability to manage available information," said Frank Chavez, district supervisor at the Oil Conservation Division. "It is equally important to note that we now have a system that the general public can easily use to access the agency's complete repository of documents. Geologists and engineers are especially pleased, since they can electronically download some of the data for analysis without having to drive miles to our offices."
