Fujitsu Recognized by Integrated Solutions Magazine for Providing Outstanding Document Imaging Value to the United States Army Recruiting Command
San Jose, CA, March 29, 2004 — Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc. (FCPA), a market leader in document imaging scanners and services, today announced it has been honored by Integrated Solutions magazine as an I3 Award winner for excellence in the field of document imaging. The United States Army Recruiting Command (Fort Knox, KY), in conjunction with Fujitsu, received the I3 Award in the "Innovative Installation of Document/Content Management for Large Enterprise" category. Winners were recognized this month at the Advanstar AIIM 2004 Conference and Exhibition in New York.

The annual Integrated Solutions I3 Awards are presented to end users that have implemented outstanding document and content management systems. Entries are judged by Integrated Solutions' editors based on the solution's use of innovation, integration, and its potential to inspire others.
"We're proud to be involved with the United States Army Recruiting Command and its efforts to streamline their new recruit induction process," said Don McMahan, vice president of sales, Imaging Products Group, FCPA. "The tremendous time savings and ROI figures which were realized is something Fujitsu takes great pride in with our government solutions. We are honored that our efforts have been recognized by a well respected publication such as Integrated Solutions."
Innovative Installation of Document/Content Management for Large Enterprise Winner
The U.S. Army Recruiting and Command (USAREC), headquartered in Fort Knox, KY, is the organization responsible for all documentation associated with new recruits to the U.S. Army. Prior to its content management implementation, a total of 760 Army induction counselors had to physically process approximately 250 million pages of official documentation per year. Recognizing the need to streamline the new recruit induction process, and reduce the time and cost associated with photocopying and storing millions of hardcopies (in compliance with the Government Paperwork Elimination Act), the USAREC decided to implement a distributed desktop scanning solution. The solution resulted in each Army, Army Reserve, and Army National Guard Guidance Counselor at each of the 65 Military Entrance Process Stations (MEPS) integrating a Fujitsu fi-4220C duplex departmental scanner and electronic record management system from Documentum with the Army Recruiting Information Support System. The integrated system is customized to meet the user's needs, built in accordance with records lifecycle guidelines as established by the Department of Defense.
The fully integrated hardware and software system has resulted in USAREC's ability to input, catalog and retrieve more than 270 different document types in a one-click step. Along with the time and cost benefits associated with streamlining processes, USAREC also implemented a system that automatically generates enlistment contracts unique to each individual. That functionality alone can save as much as $500,000 per year by reducing mistakes due to inadvertent human error. With hardcopies no longer being filed, and a finite three-to-seven-year retention period for previously archived photocopies, the term "army surplus" will soon no longer apply to paper at USAREC.
"The Integrated Solutions' I3 Award was established to recognize organizations that have envisioned and successfully implemented innovative and inspiring document imaging projects," said Ken Congdon, document and content management editor, Integrated Solutions magazine. "USAREC took on an enormous challenge, which included developing an entire new scanning system, managing implementation challenges, and driving user compliance. Its success and demonstrable ROI numbers speak for themselves."
