Fujitsu Announces Availability of New fi-4860C Color Scanner with Ultrasonic Double-Feed Detection

San Jose, CA, December 17, 2003 — Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc. (FCPA), a market leader in document imaging scanners and services, today announced volume availability of its new fi-4860C production-level scanner equipped with state of the art ultrasonic double-feed detection technology, which helps prevent lost images and enables larger batches of mixed document types to be scanned quickly, reliably, and automatically. With the addition of ultrasonic technology, Fujitsu's fi-4860C becomes the first scanner in the document imaging market to include three independent methods to detect document double-feeds -- the scanner is also equipped with infrared and length sensors. All three detection methods can be used separately or can be combined to accommodate a wide variety of document environments.

In addition to ultrasonic double-feed detection functionality, the fi-4860C, named a Product of the Year Finalist by CMP Media's Transform Magazine, includes an optional field upgrade kit to integrate Kofax's newest version of VirtualReScan (VRS) automated document image-perfecting software and Adrenaline 650iMV SCSI interface boards. As part of an expanded strategic partnership announcement with Kofax in September, Fujitsu will be providing Kofax VRS software options across all levels of its "fi" series enterprise scanner product line.  

Furthermore, the new Fujitsu fi-4860C offers high-speed duplex scanning, automatic page-size detection and document deskew in grayscale mode, and a 500-page automatic document feeder (ADF) that handles document sizes ranging from 2.9" x 2.9" to 11" x 17".  FCPA's Imaging Products Group (IPG) has priced the fi-4860C starting at less than $17,000 (U.S. list).

The fi-4860C production-level scanner is available through authorized resellers, VARs, and distributors including Ingram Micro, Tech Data, Optical Laser, NewWave Technologies, Cranel Imaging and Compucenter de Mexico.

About VirtualReScan (VRS)

VRS performs a multi-point inspection of each document which greatly improves readability of scanned images by automatically straightening, cropping and optimizing exposure in real time. Image inconsistencies such as alignment, brightness and contrast are immediately corrected by VRS so that only the straightest, most readable images are captured by the system.

VRS achieves high levels of accuracy in data captured from scanned documents by greatly reducing the need for manual corrections of intelligent character recognition (ICR) and optical character recognition (OCR) results. VRS improved OCR results approximately 35 percent in tests conducted by independent research firm Doculabs. With VRS, users can load any combination of document types and sizes into a scanner and simply press the scan button.

The use of VRS as part of the document capture process will result in lower operating costs due to increased automated recognition accuracy, fewer rescans, easier-to-read images, and a significant reduction in the manual labor required to presort documents and change scanner settings.
