Fujitsu And JMR Demonstrate 2.5" Serial ATA Hard Disk Drive Storage Solutions

Storage Leaders Will Showcase 2.5" Serial ATA RAID Solution at IDF Fall 2003

San Jose, CA, September 15, 2003 — Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc. (FCPA), one of the world's leading suppliers of hard disk drives and computer peripherals, and JMR Electronics, a leading manufacturer of data storage solutions offering one of the industry's widest selection of Fibre Channel, SCSI and IDE storage systems, will demonstrate the first Serial ATA RAID storage solution using Fujitsu 2.5" SATA hard disk drives at the Intel Developer Forum Fall 2003 Conference, San Jose, California, September 16-18, 2003. Fujitsu and JMR will demonstrate the JMR SATAStor utilizing Fujitsu 2.5" Serial ATA hard disk drives in a RAID Shuttle enclosure. The JMR SATAStor is a small form factor PC measuring a mere 5.25" with 6 Fujitsu hard disk drives in a RAID configuration.

"Fujitsu and JMR share a common vision of storage -- increased performance and reliability for a wide range of solutions that are fraction of the size of today's products," said Mike Chenery, vice president, Advance Product Engineering, Fujitsu Computer Products of America. "JMR immediately realized the value of a 2.5" Serial ATA hard disk drive in today's market and we look forward to showing the first example of this exciting technology to the IDF audience."

The evolution to smaller form factors is a natural occurrence in technology.  Fujitsu 2.5" hard disk drives offer lower power, lower acoustics, higher capacity per same space, RAID/redundancy capabilities, and overall performance improvements when compared to 3.5" hard disk drives. In addition, small form factor hard disk drives offer more than adequate reliability and data life when operated in a controlled environment with temperatures below 55 degrees Celsius.

"JMR offers a wide range of storage solutions and we've worked with Fujitsu to deliver another market-leading product to our partners and customers," said Josef Rabinovitz, president and CEO, JMR Electronics.  "JMR and Fujitsu have developed a RAID solution the size of a CD-ROM enclosure allowing customers to think of new ways in which small form factor storage solutions can serve their business needs."

Serial ATA has shown its superiority in RAID operations because all connections are point-to-point and the design is not complicated by the traditional Parallel ATA connection. Additionally, new RAID controllers are being designed for larger numbers of hard disk drives that can only be connected using the small Serial ATA seven-wire interface on a backplane. Serial ATA also offers the peformance advantage of command queuing and the opportunity to reorder read commands for minimum access time.

"Marvell® began working with Fujitsu on our 888i8030 Serial ATA bridge chip over two years ago and  we are excited to see our collaborative efforts realized in a working demo for the IDF audience," said Dr. Alan J. Armstrong, vice president of marketing, Storage Business Group, Marvel. "In addition to the Serial ATA bridge chip used on the Fujitsu hard disk drive, Marvell is also pleased to have provided our industry-leading 88SX5081 PCI-X to 8-port SATA I Host Controller for use in the demonstration. The market has begun its transition to Serial ATA and our work with segment leaders like Fujitsu and JMR will provide end-users with products that challenge traditional storage applications."
