Fujitsu Announces Volume Availability Of MAS 15K Enterprise Series Hard Drives

San Jose, CA, March 24, 2003 — Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc. (FCPA), one of the world's leading suppliers of hard drives and computer peripherals, today announced volume shipments of its MAS Series hard disk drives beginning in March 2003. The news follows Fujitsu's announcement that it remained the number two provider of enterprise hard drives and recorded its second quarter of sequential mobile hard drive growth in 4Q02.  The Fujitsu MAS series disk drives deliver industry leading performance and set uncompromising standards for computing platforms such as workstations, network file servers and enterprise servers.

Through its commitment to research and development, Fujitsu has gained critical insights and expertise on the core components required for next-generation drive technology.  Technology ownership enables the Fujitsu group to manage and guide the production process, including initial product design, the integration of key components, final assembly and compatibility and interoperability testing.

The MAS series disk drives achieve an amazing 118.2MB/s peak internal data transfer rate, providing a superior solution for the most demanding digital audio/video applications such as non-linear editing and playback systems. The Ultra320 SCSI interface provides up to 320MB/s data transfer rates and the drives offer an average seek time of 3.3ms. Fujitsu's MAS series offers three capacity points of storage in a 1-inch high form factor: 18.4GB, 36.7GB and 73.5GB.

An industry leading rotational speed of 15,000RPMs reduces the average rotational latency to 2ms, an improvement of 33% over 10K RPM drives. Minimizing rotational latency and seek times are the key factors that improve system response time/performance in demanding transaction processing applications such as banking, POS and reservation systems.

Other new technologies include reduced acoustic levels via the use of FDB (Fluid Dynamic Bearings) and the introduction of "Acceleration Feed Forward," a method of canceling out rotational vibration/shock resulting in improved performance.

Availability

Fujitsu's MAS Series hard disk drives are currently available to OEMs worldwide and at all Fujitsu authorized distributors which include Arrow Electronics, Avnet, Ingram Micro, Microland Electronics and Tech Data.
