Fujitsu to Showcase 2.5" Serial ATA Hard Disk Drive at Intel Developer Forum

Fujitsu Leads HDD Market with the Only 2.5" Serial ATA Hard Drive

San Jose, CA, September 09, 2002 — Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc. (FCPA), one of the world's leading suppliers of hard drives and computer peripherals, today announced its showcasing of the industry's first 2.5" hard disk drive with Serial ATA (SATA) architecture the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) Fall 2002, September 9-12, in San Jose, Calif., underscoring Fujitsu's commitment to the SATA interface as an eventual replacement of the Parallel ATA interface.

Fujitsu joins IDF Fall 2002 as the only HDD vendor with 2.5" form factor HDD products that support the Serial ATA interface.  Fujitsu announced that sample drives are now available to strategic partners.

According to Fujitsu, the primary benefit of the Serial ATA interface -- allowing data transfer at rates of 150 Megabytes per second with dedicated throughput -- is fully realized when that performance is delivered in a 2.5" HDD form factor, bringing Serial ATA's speed, quick response and intelligence to consumer electronics and mobile computers and, eventually, enterprise storage systems and desktop computers that will ultimately shift to a smaller-form-factor HDD solution.

"We are excited that Fujitsu is demonstrating its 2.5" Serial ATA hard disk drive as it represents a milestone in advancing the mobile, server, and consumer electronics platforms," said Jason Ziller, Intel technology initiative manager and Serial ATA Working Group chairman.  "Fujitsu, Intel, and other industry leaders have been working together to develop the Serial ATA architecture -- and its higher performance and data reliability -- and we expect Serial ATA to become the common interface across many major platforms."

"Fujitsu has been a long-time supporter of and contributor to the Serial ATA Working Group's efforts to ensure that the full benefits of the Serial ATA interface are brought quickly and purposefully to the technology industry," said Mike Chenery, vice president, advanced product engineering, Fujitsu Computer Products of America.  "We've demonstrated that commitment by building the world's first 2.5" SATA hard disk drive as we're committed to delivering to mobile, enterprise and consumer electronics customers the speed of SATA and the small-form-factor that Fujitsu technology affords.  Speed is essential -- speed and small size is ideal."

Fujitsu is a core contributing member of the Serial ATA Working Group, which is developing the technical Serial ATA specification, creating awareness of the value of Serial ATA, and generating industry-wide support and adoption of the Serial ATA interface.  More information can be found at the Serial ATA Working Group website located at http://www.serialata.org.

Fujitsu is a leading developer and manufacturer of HDD products for both the mobile (2.5") and enterprise storage markets and holds the number two market share position in the enterprise HDD market category, according to research firm Gartner Dataquest.

Fujitsu strategic partners and SATA market makers interested in receiving a sample of Fujitsu's 2.5" hard disk drive should send an e-mail to mypartner@fcpa.fujitsu.com.
