Fujitsu Announces New 15,000 RPM Enterprise Hard Drives

Reliable, High Performance Hard Drives Now Even Faster

San Jose, CA, May 25, 2001 — Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc. (FCPA), one of the world's leading suppliers of hard drives and computer peripherals, today introduced its new family of enterprise hard drives designed for optimal performance and product quality in enterprise computing environments.  Created with the most demanding server and workstation applications in mind, the MAM Series, with a 15,000 RPM spindle speed, provides an industry-leading maximum internal data transfer rate of up to 88.9MB/sec.

"Today's high-speed computing processes and bandwidth-hungry applications require faster, more efficient access when reading data," said Mark Geenen, president of leading data storage market research firm TrendFocus.  "With the addition of the new 15,000 RPM enterprise hard drives to the MAM series family, Fujitsu has provided the market an advanced solution with an average seek time of 3.5ms, average rotational latency of 2ms and capacity points up to 36.7GB."

Superior Speed and Performance

The new MAM series from Fujitsu consists of two new enterprise hard drives featuring over 9GB per platter offered at capacity points of 18.4 and 36.7GB.  In addition to offering a fast maximum internal data transfer rate of up to 88.9MB per second, the series will be available with interfaces including Ultra160 and Ultra320 and all versions feature an 8MB, multi-segmented data buffer, which allows for consistent data transfers.

"With the introduction of the new 15,000 RPM enterprise hard drive family, Fujitsu offers its customers the speed and performance needed for today's demanding applications," commented Sam Sawyer, director of storage product management, FCPA.  "Fujitsu recognized the increase in customer demand for speed and reliability and now brings to market an enterprise class drive built to meet those needs."

In addition to 88.9MB/s transfer rates, Ultra320 SCSI boasts new performance enhancing features including data packet protocol, quick arbitration and selection, and signal pre-compensation, all of which are important new features designed for next generation performance-oriented computing environments.

Further, because today's high speed computing processes and bandwidth-hungry applications require faster, more efficient access when reading data, Fujitsu has improved the average seek time on the new enterprise series to 3.5ms.

Fujitsu's Commitment to Reliability

The new MAM series from Fujitsu provides the industry's highest MTBF rating of 1,200,000 hours and is covered by a five-year warranty.  Advanced GMR head technology enables Fujitsu to produce, 1-inch high form factor drives with 2 ¾" media at industry-leading areal density of 15.8GB/sq.in.  Fewer heads and platters reduce the number of moving parts needed, greatly improving mechanical reliability.  The combination of advanced, high performance features, and efficient design embodied in the new MAM drives provide a compelling solution for customers seeking the best possible price to performance value.

Availability

The new MAM series is now available for customer evaluation.  Volume shipments are scheduled to start in 3Q01.
