New Fujitsu Enterprise Hard Drive Family Offers High Performance and Superior Quality

San Jose, CA, January 26, 2001 — Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc. (FCPA), one of the world's leading suppliers of hard drives and computer peripherals, today introduced its new family of enterprise hard drives designed for optimal performance and product quality in enterprise computing environments. Designed for the most demanding server and workstation applications, the MAN Series, with 10,000 RPM spindle speed, provides an industry-leading maximum internal data transfer rate of speeds up to 84MB/sec. This performance combination, in many applications, outperforms current generation 15,000 RPM drives at a much lower cost and reduced power consumption.

Increased Performance and Consistent Quality

Fujitsu's new MAN series consists of three new enterprise hard drives featuring over 18GB per platter and are offered at capacity points of 18.4, 36.7, and 73.5GB. In addition to offering a fast maximum internal data transfer rate of up to 84MB per second, the series will be available with Ultra160, Ultra320 Wide SCSI, and FC-AL2 (2-Gb/s) interfaces, all versions feature a larger, 8 MB, multi-segmented data buffer. Ultra320 SCSI boasts new performance enhancing features including, data packet protocol, quick arbitration and selection, and signal pre-compensation, all of which are important new features designed for next generation performance-oriented computing environments. Further, because today's high speed computing processes and bandwidth-hungry applications require faster, more efficient access when reading data, Fujitsu has improved the average seek time on the new enterprise series to 4.5ms.

The Fujitsu MAN series provides the industry's highest MTBF rating of 1,200,000 hours and is covered by a five-year warranty. All models incorporate new reliability-enhancing features including reduced head and platter counts and a brass alloy top cover for lower acoustics. Advanced GMR head technology enables Fujitsu to produce, 1-inch high form factor drives with industry leading capacity points up to 73.5 GB with just 4 platters and 8 heads. Fewer heads and platters reduce the number of moving parts needed, greatly improving mechanical reliability. Availability

The MAN series will be available for customer evaluation in 1Q01 with volume shipments starting in 2Q01.
