Fujitsu Begins Manufacturing Lead-Free Relays
Sunnyvale, CA, April 29, 2003 — To address world-wide environmental concerns, Fujitsu Components America, Inc. today announced that it will switch to lead-free relays and begin shipments in June 2003. The company’s other product lines (connectors, resistive touch panels, thermal printers, KVM switches, and keyboards) will be converted to lead-free materials by March 2004.
Fujitsu’s new lead-free relay line will consist of electromechanical and solid-state relays for power and telecom/signal applications. They will be manufactured with a tin, gold and copper solder that is able to withstand maximum process temperatures of 260°C. The new devices are drop-in replacements for the company’s existing relays.
Under Fujitsu’s test conditions, the lead free relays provide up to 250°C (reflow) and 260°C (flow) solder heat resistance. In addition, solderability and connection reliability of the new relays using both lead solder and lead-free solder has been verified. Test data is disclosed on the web site.
According to the Fujitsu, pricing for the lead-free relays may be up to 5% over the cost of previous lead relays, depending on quantity.
