New Print Mechanisms Output Two Colors

Sunnyvale, CA, June 11, 2001 — Fujitsu Takamisawa America, Inc. (FTA) today released a series of high-speed, thermal print mechanisms with two-color print capabilities for OEMs. Applications include receipt printers, POS and banking terminals, ticket and coupon dispensing machines, label printers, measuring devices, and medical instrumentation.

The 2- and 3-inch FTP-602MCL101/102 print mechanisms use the direct-thermal print method to produce either blue-and-black or red-and-black output on two-color, thermosensitive paper. This non-impact, print method eliminates the need for any ink ribbons or toner.

A 24V power source supplies a low current to the thermal print head to develop the red or blue colors. When a higher current is applied, the black color develops. Fujitsu's proprietary head-drive control optimally regulates the applied energy to prevent bleeding when two colors are printed close together.

The FTP-622MCL101/102 series offers 203 dot-per-inch (8 dots/mm) print resolution and a maximum print speed of 460 dotlines per second for two-color output. The print speed for monochrome output is 800 dot lines per second (100 mm/second).

The printers accommodate various 58mm (2.25 inch)-wide media with thickness ranging from 60 to 100 micrometer. A paper loading function minimizes media handling by automatically feeding it through the front or bottom insertion path. In addition, a newly designed platen release mechanism simplifies access to the print head for cleaning or replacement.

Available immediately, a FTP-622MCL101/102 2-inch printer is priced at $51.25 and a 3-inch printer is $67.50 in 1000-piece quantities. An optional automatic cutter and a Centronics or a serial interface board are also available.
