Now that the Lahey Clinic has pulled together its disparate silos of data, the next step for the world-renowned organization is to “put a portal on all this and have physicians really feel like it’s one system,” says Nelson Gagnon, Lahey’s chief information officer.
With a variety of applications in place that worked well for most physicians and staff, Gagnon and the rest of the executive team were loathe to rip out old systems and replace them with new ones that might not work as well and that likely would be accompanied by a steep learning curve.
Instead, Lahey has adopted a best-of-breed approach to technology and called on companies such as SeeBeyond and Fujitsu Consulting to pull them all together as if they were one.
“We implemented an automated workflow around the process rather than re-engineering it,” said Jim Bradbury, vice president at Fujitsu Consulting and head of the Lahey project. As Bradbury sees it, the first stage of the Lahey initiative required integrating content in one place and in a format that was easily accessible.
“Once you do that, you can start to build automated processes,” Bradbury said. “Once these processes are automated, you can start to link those processes together and bring about significant change.”
